FOOTBALL.

(By Oiiitic.) The " wearers of the green " for tho first representative match of the Wirarapa team, have been selected by the Committee of our Union, and on Saturday next, tho annual trial of strength will take place between "our boys" and the 'Wellington reps. Tho following is the team; - Back, C. Perry; three-quarters, Kalaugher, E. Udy, Tlumpsou, McCarty; halves, J, Perry, Haumber; forwards, Watson, G. Welch, Day, Tyler, Fairbrother, 0. Percy, Amos and Mitchell, Emergencies—Backs, B. Hirschborg, E. Polling; forwards, C. Udy, J. Bannister. The team as a whole is a good one, but it is my opinion, as an outsider, that it could undoubtedly be better. When such men as Pani, H. Perry, and D'Arcy are excluded, it ought to show'that tho Wairarapa backs are above the average, Tho forward division are all good sterling players, but I fancy it is a fatal mistake under the new rules for the Committee to take speed from the forwards and substitute muscle. For fast men, Eagle, J, Bannister or Wallace should have found a place, all being swift and accurate dribblers.

The team has been very evenly meted out from the various senior Clubs, viz., Mastertonl, Carterton 4, Greytown 4, and Red Stars 8,

but I do not think this should in any way have caused the Committee to exclude good men for the sake of

equal; division. Paul's exclusion is stated to he due to his being ajurioi', This is a grave mistake. His play against the English team last year, and the good form he lias shown right through this season, should have placed him. I hope the Com-

mittee will see their folly ere the Native team meets us. The Reps will miss the valuable services of

Whatman in their ranks this year, both as a player and loader. I should like to see Joe Ferry picked to captain the team this year, as ho

lias represented Waicarapa foi several years, and it would be hare

to find a better man for the position. Possibly, a slight resume of the various players will not bo out of place.

0, Perry (Ifasterton) as full back, will, no doubt shine, ho being aj safe collar, splended lack, and swift runner, He is in particularly good form this year, and is almost sure at an angle place kick. Kalaugher ((ireytown) has not yet been tried in any big match, but being swift, and a long kick, should justify the Committee's selection. However, I would rather have seen Pani in his place. E. Udy (Greytown) is playing better this year than last, Ho is fast, fends well, is a hard man to stop, and kicks fairly well. His weakness is in collaring. Thompson (Stars) is the fastest man in the team. He is extremely

quick in getting away, very dodgy, and is dangerous near the line. Ho will doubtless prove a serious thorn in the Wellington men's sido. He is a nice collarcr and always takes the ball with a great degree of certainty, McCarty (Carterton), has well earned a reputation, and fully deserves his position. Ho (with the aid of Baumber) has been tho mainstay of their team throughout the season, and has dono his share of the scoring. He is a sure long kick, and seldom misses collaring his man. He is the best kick in the team,

In Banmbor (Carterton) and J, Perry (Masterton), as halves, we could not wish for better. Both are strong runners, and most proficient in collaring and picking up the leather. In minor, but, nevertheless, occasionally important points of the game, it would I think, be hard to teach either of them much, Baumber should pass more, and his game would bo perfect. I hope next Saturday botli the halves will pass out to the three-quarters, as they are four swift men, Both Bauinber and Perry aro dangerous men to score, and take a lot of watching. Watson (Star), is reckoned by experts to bo the coming player of the Wairarapa. He is always on the ball, fleet of foot, and tackles well.

CI. Welch (Masterton), plays with a lot of clash, and is good in loosi play, Pay (Masterton), is the heaviest man in the team. Works hard in the scrums, and is good in the open, Tyler and Fairbrother (Carterton), both good fast men, and fair followersup. Both dribble well.

0. Percy (Star), is a good, honest player. Goes to work with a will and plays the game. Is a safe tackier and good in loose play, Mitchell (Greytown), is a hardworking forward, always on the ball, and plays with considerable dash right through the game, He is thoroughly reliable. Amos (Groytown) is fast in the first spell, but generally lacks "go" in the second,

With the exception of six the team is mado up of "nowblood" altogether.

In conclusion I may safely predict a very interesting match next Saturday, and our Reps, will strive their utmost to uphold the reputation our district has obtained in past seasons.

I hoar that C. Perry declines to play as full-back, and B. Hirschbcrg will fill that position,

The match between the second fifteen of-tho Stars and the Grey town Fire Brigade, which was to have been played on the former's ground did not come off, owiug to the latter team not putting in an appearance.

The match between Messrs Wagland's and Ross and Muir'a flaxmill hands was played on the former's ground on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the former team hy thirteen points to nil, For the winners T. Wrigley potted two goals and secured a try,

Mr Siiodgrass, Secretary of the Wairarapa Union, lias received an intimation that the Wellington men definitely accept next Saturday, 10th August, to play the Wairarapa representatives. The match -will, therefore, take place at Groytown on the date named,

Saturday's operations were not extensive at Carterton. The North V South match wag abandoned after only one spell had been played, (won by North by one point to nil) in order that the only chance before next Saturday of playing a representative trial match might he taken, Day, it might be mentioned, got the try in the County game, and the

contest thus postponed will probably take place on the Saturday after next, 17th August. In the trial match, fifteen Representatives played the next best seventeen. The Reps, won, hands down, by three points to nil. In the evening the actual team foe the Wellington match was chosen by Mcssn Snodgrass, Webster and D'Arcy, the Selection Committee. Tlio Carterton Pirates beat the Gladstone Stars at Carterton on Saturday by six points to nil. Tho following scored trys for the winning team:—J. Darrock, R. Darrock, converted by the sauio player into a goal, A, (Mister, and J. Kiddie, There was one force down against the Pirates, but with that exception they carried all before tbni, The Gladstones wero a heavierleam but played a weaker game. Tin Pirates were captained by R, Darrock, and tho Stars by Tiaro. The officials were:—Mr Nix, referee; Mr M. Nicholson, aladstoue umpire; Mr W, Morris, Carterton umpire.

Invehcakgill, Monday. The Maori Footballers arrived at the Bluff by the Eotomahana last night. A largo crowd gathered at the railway station to meet them this morning, but they did not com on by the first train, They play a match against Southland on Saturday.
