Taratahi-Carterton Road Board.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board was held on Saturday. Present:—Messrs 11. R. Bunny, (Chairman), E. W. Dorset, G. W. Dellar, B. W, Maunsell, N.Grace, J, Rayner, W. B, Allen, Ed, Morgan and Jas. Stevens. (Before the business of the meeting commenced Mr E, S. Maunsell begged to move a voto of symyolhy to the Chairman in tho bereavement he and his family had sustained since tho last meeting of the Board. The Chairman in a few appropriate remarks thanked the mover and his brother wardens for their sympathy to himself and friends), The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the Treasurer reported a debit balance of £sßllos Gd. It was resolved that Messrs H. R, Bunny, E. W. Dorset, and N. Grace be a committee to wait on the bank manager in reference to the overdraft.
Correspondence inwards:— A bill
reference to the legalising'of a certain period of the year for firin» felled bush, The purport of the Bill having been read, Mr Morgan moved that the proposed alteration as specified in the Bill would not be beneGcial to the district. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder. From Mr Bremncr re the survey of Dorset road, Tnratalii. Moved by Mr Grace and seconded by the Chairman, that tha Wliareama Boad Board be written to re tho annexing the Wliareama road with this district, Carriod. Moved by Mr Dorset that the Chairman and the mover be deputed to wait on Messrs Oats with a view of seeing their Crown grant, before the survey, os made by Mr Breroner, be acceptcdl and compare the two, Seconded by Mrßayner and carried. From Mr Joe Bailey re the creek leading to his property. Left to llie warden. From Jas Hodder re removing fence off the load, Resolved that notice bo given to the owner of the property to remove tho said fence.
Some discussion arose as to the powers of tho Board to compel property holders to clear tho creeks from fallen timber, and tho Clerk was instructed to ascertain what power the Board had in that direction, and that if it (the Board) had .10 power in that matter to at once communicate with tho member for the district to get a bill passed at tho present session of Parliament to legalise the Board's taking such steps as may be necessary to enforce tho compliance of keeping all creeks clear of timber within their district, Mr Dorset asked that Mr Darroch bo permitted to 611 in a drain at Waitangi creek, Park road. Allowed, Also that Mr Darroch see to a drain, which connects Somerset Road with Park Road. Mr Maunsell moved that in view of tho efficient manner in which Mr Darroch has served (he Board as roadman, he should be placed in a moro responsible position as overseer at a salary of £, 125 a year instead of as at present on day wages, and that the same be charged to the different Wards, and that arrangements may terminate on 30 days notice, Seconded by Mr Morgan and carried, Mr Maunsell brought up the question of paying the Returning Officer £2 2s for every election of Wardens. He was informed that the Returning Officer was entitled to that sum under (he Act, Mr Maunsell moved that tenders be invited for deepening and widening a cutting near the schoolliouse, Waihakeke, An amendment was carried that on account of the heavy overdraft it is inadvisable lo undertake any fresh works at present. Mr Maunsell brought under the notice of the Board the insufficiency of the fenco on Para Road, and moved that another wire be added to prevent sheep from getting through, Mr Morgan seconded the motion,— Carried. Resolved that certain
property holders be notified to clear tlm gorse from tlioir holdings. Accounts amounting to .£BB Gs 2d were passed tor payment, and the meeting closed.
