during their incarceration, Mr H. do Clifton has on view in one of tho windows of the Wholeeale Drapery Company a handsome oil painting in opal of a portrait of a lady enlarged from a photograph, the work of a Sydney artist. The picture i'sattracting considerable attention, and its perfection has been tho means of securing to Mr do Clifton, the local agent, numerous orders in Masterton. The windows of the Wholesale Drapery Company will be lit up to-night for the purpose of dis-
playing this work of ark. Mr Walter Perry deserves the thanks of tho settlers of Masterton and tho surrounding district whose children attend tho public school for the liberal manner in which ho has acted over tlio water supply. ' Complaints had been made front time to time that tho drinking wator in use at tho public school was impure, and samples having been subjected to medical inspection they proved
to bo true. The School Committee endeavored to obtain a purer sourco of water, and entered into negotiations with Mr Ronall, chairman of the Committee, with a viow to obtaining a supply from tho springs ihat rise on his ground. It was estimated that pipes could bo
laid on from the spring to tho school at a cost ot £3O. The Town Lands Trustees and tho Education Board
agreed to pay half tho necessary outlay, i conditionally. Mr Renall intimated to ■ the School Committee that he would ' require a yoarly rental of L 5 if the water waß taken from his spring. This annual rent being more than tho School Committee estimated they could pay a sub committee was appoincd to seek a fresh sourco of sunply, Mr Walter Perry was inter/iewed and readily consulted to meet the Committee. Ho agreed to giyo the Education Board a lease for 939 years at ono shillii.g per annum, with a right to enter the grounds to lay pipes, &c. Tho Committee promptly closed the bargain, and there is every probability that the Education Board will agree to it. Tho children will soon have a constant spring of pure drinking water, cool and relreshing, and of even temperature all the year. Birch belongs to one of the most respected families in Perth, and much sympathy is folfc for them aud also Caporn and his family.
Such a crowd and such a rush were hardly ever seen in tho Empire City as was witnessed on Thursday last, From 'every quarter of tho city and from all points of tho compass wero largo numbers of people seen wendin? their way on foot, by tram, cab, steamer, rail, and all with ono object, viz. to be at the opening of the Winter Alio at To Aro House, Wellington. As might bo surmised tliero was a rush to get admittance and no ono will bo surprised to learn that tho doors of the Warehouse had to he repeatedly shut during the day, so as to eiyo an opportunity to attend to customers within tho b'lilding. We hear that tho purchases were unusually large and numerous.
