money to tho committee, j An ingenious contrivance is about to bo brought out bv Captain Woodward, of the Royal mail steamer Don, by which it is proposed to do away with oars as a means of propelling ships' lifeboats, It cousists of a hand-power screw prepellor whioh enables tho boat to bo driven by anyone in it, though unacquaiuted with ■rowing. This, Captain Woodward points out, will obviate the chance of passenners who may get away from a stranded ship finding themselves in boat without oars or having them without anyone skilled in their use.
