Wellington Supreme Court
Wellington, July 8. Herbert Allandale alias Williams alias Morrison was indicted upon two oharges of having broken into and entered the Fielding Eost Office on 29th April, and stolen three post letters and an iron safe. Prisoner was found guilty and admitted he had been previously convicted al Wellington of burglary. He was sentenced to penal servitude for ten years.
Wellington, Thursday. Ah the Supreme Court Peter Micldeson pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, and was sentenced to two years hard labor. Tho case against J. L. Thompson is proceeding.
Senous Fire Hawera, Thursday. A serious fire broke out m High street at 1,30 this morning by which Barraclough s butchers' shop, Sutton's drapery store, and Pritchard's chemist shop wero totally destroyed Davidson's general store and dwelling were cleared out and great damage done to goods. The total loss is estimated at L 5.000. The insurances known are Button's stock, valued at £2,000, insured £IOOO in the Standard; Pritchard's stock, valued at 11,500, insured £250 in the Standard, and LSOO in tho North German, Crozier's buildings, let to Barraclough and Sutton, are insured for 1800 in the Phoenix. Tho Insurance on Pritchard's building is unknown.
Auckland Items.
Auckland, July 3. A meeting of unemployed was fixed to take place this morning at the foot of Grey-street for the purpose of considering the question of appealing to the Government to establish refiof works, but only about 20 men were present, and no decision was come to. It is proposed to forward a petition to Wellington on the subject. A petition from property owners' requesting the Fire Insurance Association to reconsider their decision to increase the tariff on houses in which colonial ovens are used has been received by the' Association and laid on the table. A tangi for the deceased Maori chieftain Wetere To Reronga was ■ hold at Otorohanga on Sunday. A large number of Natives were present,
A lad named Harry Larnpra has been missing from Te Kuiti for some days, and it is feared he has been drowned,
A young man of 28 years of age. named William Taylor, took a dose of strychnine to-day at Taupiri, and died shortly afterward. The cause is said to bo disappointment in love, A lire broko out to-night in the label-room of the Now Zealand Frozen Meat Company's premises, but was extinguished when damage to tho extent of about .£l5O had been done.
To-day the Customs authorities seized several cases of drapery belonging to a large wholesale Homo firm, having agencies in the Colony. It is understood the seizure is tho outcome of investigations made by Mr Shannon, the Customs expert, Chantable Aid
Naher, July 3, At an ordinary meeting of the Borough Council to-night the new Charitable Aid Bill was discussed. All the members who had seen the Bill condemned it unreservedly, and great surprise was expressed at the Government not following the usual course and sending to- the local bodies a Bill which so vitally concerned them. As some members had not had an opportunity of studying, the Bill, no motion wis passed, but a special meeting .was arranged for Monday. Special meetings of the Charitable Aid Board are oalled to consider the Bill, Its condemnation

The licensee ot the Matawhiro failed to provide the fee for a renewal and went bankrupt. The licenso expired June 80, but on July 1 the Assignee paid the £25, and the County Council granted a license. The Court held that the Council could not do this, and imposed a nominal fine. The Sydenham Poultry Show held yesterday was a great Buccess, the best ever held here, There were" 640 entries, and keen competition for Langshans, Plymouth Books, and pigeons especially. Tho pigeon race was won by H. Smith's balvage, in 1 hour, 81 min, against a head wind. Corporation Gaswork. Named; July 8. The Borough Council unanimously decided to ask the local mombers of Parliament to 3upport the Bill of the Christchuroh City Council, proposing torepeallhoclauseinthe Corporations Act, 1880, which prevents boroughß establishing gas works where Buoli works already' exist.
