Trout in the Waipoua River.
_ The very low state of the Waipoua river has caused quite a number of trout to either got stranded or to become isolated in pools of water away from the stream, Yesterday Mr L. P. Ayson, the Wairarapa Acclimatisation Society's efficient curator visited the river in the vicinity of Masfcerton with a landing net, and released quite five hundred fish of from three to four inches long, and to-day lie goes twelve miles higher up the stream in the Mild Mild direction on a similar humane mission, Mr Ayson found that very few fisli indeed had perished in the lower river owing to the shallows, but he expected to find a larger loss higher up. Ho lias been very busy, or he' would liavo made the trip before. In yesterday's expedition only three or four large trout of about a foot long, were mot with and released, but pf our own knowledge we are aware that some not over scrupulous persons have been for the last week or two malting the most of such accidental standings, and we hope that our remark to this effect will lead to the police not relaxing those efforts which we know they have been making to catch someone at the trick.
