Inveroargill, January 16. A further motion of the Seaward Bush railway, which has been conBtructed entirely by the unemployed olass, was opened to-day. The railway ia now extended into the open country in the Oteramika district, which, although the earliest settlers' locality in Southland, and only twelvo miles from town, has hitherto been isolated. The inhabitants therefore made a great demonstration of their satisfaction today, and provided refreshments for all comers. Fourteon years have passed since the vote for this line was first put on the estimates of the Provincial Council.

Auckland, January 16. Captain W. H. Hazard has received a letter from Lieutenant Dormer, of Sydney, inviting a volunteer team representing Auckland to attend the coming Centennial Eifle Association meeting to be held at Sydney, and a meeting is convened for Wednesday to consider the subject. The New Zealand Sugar - Company have advanced prices for their various grades of sugar; 10s per ton for Nos 1 and 2, and 20s per ton for No 8 and A.

By a fire at Kyeburn Station, belonging to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency .Company, the National Insurance Company lose £4OO and the New Zealand £3OO. THE MURDERED INFANT, Wellington, January 17. At the inquest on the body-of the infant found at Evans Bay, medical evidence showed that death apparently resulted from strangulation. A verdict was returned of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown.
