MASTERTON MANGAHAO SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.

Meeting of Members.

The Masterton - Mangahao Special Settlement Association held a general meeting last night at the Temperance Hall, about thirty members being present, Mr A, W, Hosfg was. voted to the chair.

The Secretary (Mr Kedman) submitted a report from the Committee, in which it was. stated the survey difficulty had bpeu referred to the Surveyor General, and was on the eve of settlement. Tli9 area of the township and suburbs was found to be 715 acres, and as 525 acres only had been allotted to members, it would be necessary to make a further call of 7s 6d per acre, seeing that payment would he required at the rate of £1 per acie for the gross area. A statement of accounts was submitted, showing a balance in hand of £BIO 8s 7d, and £223 7s 9d due from the Government for survey. The total assets were £1529 Is 4d, and the liabilities £1556 los9d. The Chairman related the result of the interview which he and Mr Holdsworth had wi'h the Minister of Lands and the Surveyor General, and he said that the Committee had been slightly misled by a telegram from Mr McCardle President .of the Association, to the effect that the Minister intended confiscating the township block if the money was not paid by 31st December, The Minister stated that all he had done was to mention, in . reply to a question put to him in the House, that if the money wasnoc paid to him when due, the Government would be in a position to take possession of the land, but he had never threatened that this would actually be done.

. A resolution of no-confidence in the President was proposed but was nob carried.

It was resolved that the names of members in airears for bushfalling and grass sowing be not furnished to the Government with a view to the issue of their titles being withheld until these arrears are paid.

It was decided that the Committee be authorised to uso any funds in hand and *if necessary arrange for an advance to pav to the Government the amount required for the town and suburban block, viz £7lO, Several jiotioes of motion were given relative to the disposal of the surplus town and suburban acres, and the meeting then dosed.
