SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17.
In the Legislative Council, the Government Railway Bill was well received, and read a second time.". In the Land Act Amendment Bill the clause for electing Land Boards was thrown out, and a new clause inserted' giving Chief Commissioners the powers and functions held by existing boards. In the House, the Hon Mr Richard-. son in proposing the vote for immigration said the Government had not had; time to formulate any new proposals. The Government were of an opinion that it was desirable to introduce immigrant. farmers with moderate capital. The Government were considering the expediency of substituting land, scrip for passage money. All that the Government required at presentfor new engagementswas 110,000. On the motion of Mr Fulton the House refused to grant this sum, limiting the vote to £6720 for old engagements..
