Auckland, December 2. Olegg, charged with manslaughter, was brought up before the Police Court to-day, and committed for trial. The prisoner made a statement asserting his innocence, and. stating that he did not strike Dewson. He was admitted to bail. .
The Board of Educathn to-day received a communication from the Government notifying that they did not intend renewing the vote for training of teachers (£8000). This means the abolition of the training college, and the Board therefore resolved to give notice of the termination of the engagement to the Rev. Mr Gulliver, principal, and to make arrangements with the students. ■ Tauranga, December 2. The body of Caines, who was drowned by the boat accident on Saturday, last, was found down the harbor to-day. The inquest will be held to-morrow.
FIRES IN AUCKLAND. Auckland, December 8. Soon after midnight this morning a five-roomed cottage in Surrey Crescent, belonging to J. D. Watson, was destroyed by fire. It had been unoccupied three months, and was insured in the South British for £l2O. Two hours later, a four roomed house in First Avenue, Kingsland, was burned down. It was also unoccupied, and owned by Mr Barker, Insurance unknown.
