A SCENE IN THE WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL.
A scene eclipsing all those which have hitherto taken place, occurred in the City Council Chambers last evening. Cr Petherick, the defeated candidate for the Mayoralty, who was evidently suffering from the effects of his dissappointment. rather more than might have been expected, seeing that he had a similar experience three years ago, entered the Chamber at a quarter to eight, and as he was passing the reporter's table was met by Cr Edwards, when the following little diversion took place:- Cr Edwards; " Well how are you ?" Cr Petherick: "None the better for you." Cr Edwards: "That's true, but you're not much worse." Cr Petherick;" You're a Crawler." Cr Edwards: "Perhaps I am, but I wouldn't crawl up a poll so slowly as you did; but by the bye, wasn't I near it when I said you'd be 300 behind ?" With' this parting dipt Cr Edwards walked to his seat to listen quietly to the reading of the minutes. Cr Dauks then entered and bowing gravely to Cr Petherick said; "Good eventng Mr Mayor?" This was followed by a laugh from Cr A. Young, and an attempt at pacification from Cr Heaton proved too much for the dissappointed aspirant, who threatened to "mark" everybody if he got any insults, "I will," the irate Councillor continued, •' I'll knock you all down with the ink bottles.". Cr Edwards, trying to look grave and alarmed, rose and called the attention of the Mayor to the fact that Cr Petherick was threatening the lives of the whole Council and suggested that a special constable might be of service. 'Gr Petherick: '! So I will, if I receive any more insults! I know I Vi]l nojfc be protected by'ygu" (the, Mayor), The Mayor;'» Cr Petheriok I will not allow you to be insulted —." Here the " scene" became too much for the reporters present, and one of the knights of the quill trying in vain to smother his mirth, attracted Ci' Petherick's attention, and that gentleman, turning round, and trembling with rags said .'—"And I'lldotnejame bo the reporters; if they don't know how to behave themselves, I'll start from. theWof tKe
table and go right round." The irate Councillor then asked tlio Mayor to make the-reporters retire, battbe Council haying had " enough" of Cr Petherick, order was called for aud the reading of the minutes continued.
