London, November 80, Owing to the coolness displayed by "file Agents-General in the matter,-a meeting of colonists has been convened to decide the mode of celebrating the approaching centenary of Australia.
Missionary reports received from the territory in the neighborhood of Mozambique, East Africa, state that some Australian diggers have discovered a goldfield richer than any found in Australia. Lumps of gold are visible on the field.
The Times, in a review on "The Picturesque Atlas of Australia," says the work stands unrivalled.
The Times urges that weasels and stoats should be tried before M. Pasteur's method for the extirmination of rabbits.
Lord Lyons has been received into the Catholic Church.
Six hundred and fifty British exhibitors and one hundred and fifty foreign exhibitors have applied for about 400,000 feet of space at the Melbourne Centenary exhibition. From Huddersfield alone 10,000 has been applied for. Sir P. Leighton and Sir A. Agnew believe they can arrange for the loan of a collection of pictures worth a quarter of a million, if the Victorian Commission will grant the British Commission £5,000. It is understood that Sir H. Sandford will represent Great Britain at the exhibition.
The steamship companies refuse to sign the contract for carriage unless the parcels are exempted. They also claim a remission of port dues and wharf charges, and the colonies are to hear the cost of landing the mails.
THE STATE OF lEELAND. London, November 30. Lord Hartington, speaking at Dublin, said that the legitimate national aspiration of Ireland might he satisfied like Scotland, under Imperial Parliament and Government. Mr Goschen said that bastard Nationalism would only produce unendurable Motion between Great Britain and Ireland.
December 1. A banquet was held in Dublin last night in honor of the Marquis of Hartington and the Eight Hon G. J. Goschen, Chancellor of the Exchequer. The enthusiasm which has been aroused in that city by the visit of Lord Hartington and Mr Goschen continues unabated.
Mr R. C. Graham, M.P. for Northwest Lanarkshire, and Burns, the Socialist leader, have been committed for trial for making use of seditious language at public meetings. MrD. Sheey, MP. for South Galway, has been arrested on a similar charge,
WOOL SALES. London, November 30. At the wool sales to-day a catalogue of 0,900 bales was submitted at auction. There was a steady demand throughout for all descriptions of wool. Fine to finest were rather firm, but interior to faulty lots ruled £d to Id per lb below the prices obtained at the last sales.
Buyers complain of the new clip, The Queensland yields are harsh and poor, with colored top.
Melbourne, December 1. The New Zealand Loan .and Mercantile Agency Company [limited], held their usual weekly sale to-day. Six thousand bales were, offered at auction, of which number 4115 found purchasers. There was a full attendance of buyers,, and the competition was good, but medium to inferior wools ruled easier, in sympathy with telegraphic reports received regarding the London sales. Good wools are unchanged in vaiue; greasy merino is worth lOfdperlb; crossbred lOfd; lambswool, Is Ofd. No superior scoured was offered, but best scoured realized as much as much as Is per lb, and washed fleeces Is If d.
