On Sunday evening last about nine o'clock a vigorous peal on the Fire Bell alarmed tho whole town and a report that the Kurupuni Hall was on fire caused the Volunteer and Municipal Brigades to run their Engines to that end of the Town, It turned out howevor to be a gorso fire by the roadside, which burned itself out beforo the Brigades reached thoro. We much regret having to record the death of Mrs John Varnham,. widow of the late Mr J. Varnham, of Papawai says tho Standard. The deceasod lady,' who had been lingering for tome time',- being affected with a cancer, expired at tlio residence of her son-in-law, Mr L. St George,at Greytown, on Friday night at 10 p. mi Mrs Varnham had'been a roßident in this district for about 21- years, and was greatly respected by a large circlo of friends and acquaintances. She has left nine of family, seven of whom are married. Tho funeral takea place to-day at 1 p. m. • The Groy River Argußhaß the following item : —" Saved by going to a ball,— J.
