The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1887. THE ELECTIONS.

As we write, .tbe;|4foriiiaiipp to band of tlie elections t)irough'out tlie c.olony is insufficient to. enable us Jo grasp the result frbrira'party point of,-view. The defeat of the Premier- must, how, ever, be regarded as -a? fatal-blow to the Ministry.. With respect-lo our oWn district election, we have! every reason to be satisfied. Of the Masterton poll we published a forecaste wbioh gave Mr Beetham 47 per cent of tho votes, Mr Hogg 81 per cent and MiHawkins 22 per cent. The poll returns give Mr Boetham 50 per cent of the votes, Mr Hogg 81 por. cent, and Mr Hawkins 19 per cent. It will thus be seen that we exactly guaged Mr Hogg's position, that we slightly underrated Mr Beetham's cbaiicesiand overrated .'Mr Hawkins. At the time wo wero accused of favoring Mr Beetham at the expense of Mr Hawkins, whereas \ye were, vory careful not to underrate Mr Hawkins' position. We, correctly- and impartially estimated the chances of the contest, and told our readers without reserve what they were. We do not care to say more about the Masterton election. We affect no elation at Mr Beetham's big majority, because we expected it, and wo should be sorry now the fight is : over to say . a word which would hurt the feelings of those whohave been unfortunate iri the contest. We would ratter that one and all should live to fight another day, and that in the meantime all ill feeling generated by a protracted contest should be allowed to die put. In the Southern district Mr .Buchanan has iiot-quitG • as• large a. majority as we expected, still it is sufficiently substantial to satisfy his friends. Whatever .may be the result of the elections as far as the colony is concerned, the Wairarapa has done its duty.
