The General Election
POLLING DAY,' At an early hour yesterday morning (Monday) Queen Street, Masterton woro a very animatod appearance and it was evident from the manner in which the various committees were preparing for the triangular battle that it woijld be a hard fought ono indeed. At half past eight o'clock troops of Democratic and. 'Radical skirmishers salied forth from their respective forts, armed to the teeth with elcotoral rolls, and made a terrific onslaught among the numerousundefeuded free and independent electors who were congregated in the vicinity of the public buildings. Freetrade and Protection were the principal volleys fired, an occasional round of personal qualification being introdoced to 1 turn, the enemies flank. The Opposition committee were content to reserve their strength, and consequently when the polling booth opened the other parties led off with a great dash and' for; the ■first two hours it was estimated that both of them had polled two to one,of the opposition's number. By noon tho battle was virtually over as far ,as the Radical mid Democratic corps were concerned the result of the contest, as heralded by the first lieutenat of the former coriipaoy, was Hogg 325, Hawkins 160, ifieetham 75, TJie Opposition Resets at this point
' were - now aeou to * bo advancing rapidly/jthOjYiin being led.by "John Yates," ; who was never,. known to suffer ut defeat, and r such a steady and" well' maintained ' fire was kept up during tho whole afternoon that tho result was never in doubt, and judging by tho way that file after file came to the front from four o'clock to the time of closing, the Opposition .oi«str h»ve:ticked:off.. Nt least 4 to! i of the number polled during those two hours, 'As jhe first four hours of polling was devoted to diligent can*, •vassing-'atnong- the crowdty-tfte-nctive Committeemen, and as -the electors "were. assailed, by colutnna of literaturej distributed by the various candidates in the way of election dodgers, to ■influence at the last' nibment. ' the wavering electors • 'and to cor. rect any, misrepresentations - that may, have been circulated by either pc rty, there was- not much chance for fun. However, after lunch things became .very lively 'and tho prospects of the flour trade had a rising tendency. Canvassers finding that there were no more wavering ones' to turn, devoted their energies to discussing the merits of their respeotivo candidates and thenpolicies. As a natural consequence knots of excited individuals were to be been in various quarters, whose gesticulations and arguments were suddenly out short by a volley of flour' bags, duly loaded, and an occasional egg of aticieut date, The only attempt at effigy making was a trio of life sized figures placed, upon tho para-, pot t)f Mr G. Farmers tobacconist' establishment, representing the three candidates,- A ferocious- buccaneer armed with a drawn - sword, - revolver, and knife with '* death head and cross bones" painted on his breast, was linked with a blaok hog who. appeared iu prime condition and fit for. anything, who was also supported on his right by a regular masher, attired iii a hard hitter, gloves and cane, with a roll of paper in his hand, At four o'clock the trio were sold by auction by Mr J. lorns who stated the qualifications of each in verse, and'as'delivery was given of each candidate at tlie fall of tho hammer, by it being pitched headformost into the crowd, an exciting scene and terrific dust was caused* by the sale. About seven o'clock, when tho telegraph office opened, the town wore a very serious aspect, and as tho returns from -the various places, came in, there was a .'regular stampede to the Club Hotel, ' and Mr J. Williams'shop where .the Daily extras were posted immediately the returns were received, The first to arrive we're Tinui, Taueni and Whakatiki, which gave ■Mr Beetham a majority of about one hundred, and as the .Masterton. numbers further increased his lead by 81, the spirits of the other candidates received such a damper that tlie anticipated fun did not come off." On the" declaration of' tlie Masterton. poll several'of the prominent' supporters of the Radical candidate could not believe, it, and as, the first lieutenant stood gazing upon tho telltalle numbers, an egg carefully aimed,. distributed itself among his • shirt collar' and h'afr, and hn left for borne;'.without waiting for other returns. During the evening, Mr Beetham appeared ou the Club balcony, and addressed a few words of thanks to tli3 electors, but there was* Buch a heavy shower of flour and eggs that he was compelled to beat a hasty retreat;,- ; vVe have to .thank Mr Yon Sturnier, the Returning Officer, and. Mr G. M, Park, telegraphist, for placing the numerous official telegrams at our disposal, by which means, we were enabled to -givo the public the'latost returns. ..
