Sergeant, Price who,cohducted the prosecution said the accused only camaotit of prison oil Thursday last ha.ving.jußt completed a sentonco for soliciting' alms in. Wellington.During yesterday he- went'; about' begging from house .to house .in Masterton,.' a.nd .between four and. five o'clock in the afternoon went to. the Wesloyati and finding;,no. .one;ath6me 'got tough "a'- %Mow<: .arid ransacked the place, taking .away wearing apparel.to the value of about £ls. The servant returned in time to, see towards the bush, and he immediately came back when called tfpou to-do'so, placed the things on a box, ; ex; pressed liia sorrow for - having taken' them, and went.- hjs wfly.' ; He. was arrested;-shortly after by' Gonstable Salmon in the vicinity of the parsonage with a bundle in his possession, which' he had been trying to sell. A list of previous convictions against liiin were • read—sixteen, in ail—tho senten'oes for which ranged from two weeks to twelve months, there being three'; bugcessive years for vagrancy. . *>' '• The Sergeant said that the accusod was about the worst vagrant on .the Police .books, he did not believe that -', he had earned a, single penny since, he had been in the Colony, having followed a course of crime ever since he had been in the Country. ; ' The accused admitted the offence, and also the numerous previous convictiona, and expressed regret for what he had done.
His Worship said he did not ; think it was much good advising the accused as lie appeared to be given■ over to orime, he would however have time and opportunity to amend his ways during the term he was about tb sentence him, and he hoped he would benefit by it. •'
The acoused was eentencfed to twelve months imprisonment with hard labor.
