The Mayor said that the Brigade were.agreeable that the young man in -question should drivo the engine, therefore they did' not think it worth While to invite applications for tho office.

Ho could not understand how anyone : could have allowed it to bo brought out with only a horso hitched >tc the forocarriage, it was a wonder it- was not smashed up. He did not believe in too many having the management of the eiigine. It should b'e left to the Captain to work, otherwise things would get into a muddle. Or Papworth said it was imperative that someone should be in °^ ar^ taken to the last fire without getting up steam, and considered it to be no earthly use taking it out without, generating steam en route. The Mayor explained that those iit charge of the engine had followed the written instructions sent with it.
