MR MEREDITH IN REJOINDER TO MR BEETHAM.

|TO TDK EDITOR. | Sir,—My letter of 25th -inst,, was in reply to an open and reasonable challenge oil your part, not to open old sores with Mr Beotbaui. The Counties Act cannot now be suspended tho Roads and Bridges Coustriiction Act lias bowed its head to the Loans to Local Bodies Act, and tho settlers in spite of the Sheep Inspectors, and those who ruled them, have eradicated iisdb, - . They have themselves, .and themselves alone to thank for this. Messrs Beetham and Buchanan and the Inspectors were iu'vited to attend their public meeting, August 29th,. 1884, at Tenui, prompted, by but tho invited guests were all conspicuous by their übsonce. At that meeting, resolutions, were passed, calljng upon ..the Legislature to make a senrcbihg invostigatiou into the' ■administration of the Act. 1 think ti.ifr.BeWlerij bad little-.cause to thank their representatives for their assistance in accomplishing that end. They, won for themselves a victory against .desperate odds, and deny him tho honors of war in furthorence ot Ins election. I forbear further comment. Mr Beetham's challenge in your issue of tho 27th iiist. savours rather of drawing his sword and buokling on his armour, after the fray is over.
