MASTEitTON v. CARTERTON.

The first contest for the Senior Challenge Cup of the Wairarapa Union took placeat Master ton on Saturday last between the above Clubs,, and resulted in a win for Masterton by one point. The visitors appeared on the ground one man short, and played with' .five substitutes, their team, being "consider: ably weakened by the absence of 0. Reid, J. and F. Peters, and E. Rutherfurd. The home team placed their strongest metal against tbeir opponents being strengthened at the last inoment by J. and H, Perry. The weight of the Masterton team gave them a decided advantage sver. their light visitors, more especially towards the end of, the game, when they fairly wore them down, but were unable to increase the score, owing to the aotivity of the backs, and the persistent manner in which the spectators crowded on the goal line. Mr Beeohy umpired for Carterton, Mr W. McKenzie for Masterton, and Mr W, H. Hirschberg officiated as referee. Carterton took the kick 08, and by a good punt of W.Perry's, the play was soon in the visitor's twenty-fivo, C. Perry put in a. line run, and and stopped by Bamber throwing him into touch. A nice dribble of Bethuneß was checked by flolmwood, and Roydhouse, by a good kick, forced Carterton down. On the kick out Homewood and Pelting did some good loose play which Hasher put an end to by falling on the ball, aud Bethuno was prominent in another dodgy run. The Carterton's twentyfive became the scene of fierce scrimmages, when a looso dribble transferred the play to the Masterton line, which gave Baumber an opportunity for pot at goal, the ball going within a few feet of the post, and Musterlon was forced down. The visitors did soao good forward play on the kick out, which was vigorously met by the home team, Moore saving his side by a punt into touch. Sorimmages along the vest lino followed, and the Carterton team got on a good rush; which, owing to tlio slippery state of the ground was hard to arrest, aud Baumber, by a smart bit of following up, got the first try for Carterton. Bethune took the place and although a very difficult angle mado a splendid kick, the ball hittin? the top of the post. The horns team rallied after this and the visitors were soon defending their lino and had to accept the inevitable. From the kick out scrimmages became the order, and tho Carterton line was soon menaced, but by . a good rush they, took tho, play to the 'centre, lusher pttnted well up iuto touch, which was soon after neutralised by a drop kick from Roydhouso. Some smart following up by Hounslow and Polling placed the Carterton line in danger but tho forwards wore equal to the strain and the centre of tho field was soon the sceno of operation,' M, Nicholson gained considerable for Carterton by punting Into touch, and shortly after the bull was burst, by two player trying to kick it at the same time. The second spoil was oponod by Bethune, mulling tho kick off, which brought scrimmaging in front of the Carterton goal, 11 situation that was relieved by Lucona marking, whose kiok was returned into touch by C. Perry. From the throw in scrimmaging followed, and the home team slowly but surely bore down on the Carterton line, ending in Cox securing a try after a Bhort struggle with Kemble and Rutherfuid. C, Perry look the kick, but failed to Bcore. Scrimmages in tho centre of the field followed the kick out, and Bamber, seouring a mark, punted into touch well down the field, Tho Masterton forwards workod the leather back, and TJssher was to the fore with a good kick, from which Welch marked. 0, Perry took a place kick for goal, but the distance was too fat, and Pelling.' by smart following up, was within an aco of scoring. The Carterton line was the scone of some exciting scrimmaging, but by dint of hard work t!)e play was curried tq the centre, where from a series of paoked scrimmages, a loobb dribble was started by the Maslerton forwards, and the leather was carried over their opponent's line, H.'Perry, Pelling, Welch, and Hounslow, dividing tho houor of seouring a try under the goal. C. Perry mado a bad attempt at the place kick. The weight of the Masterton team now told with effect, the visitors being forced down time after time, and till the end of the match were acting on the defensive, H. Perry made a good pot for goal which, though not successful, gave Eelling a chance to score whieh was frustrated by tho spectators. Welch, also, was spoiled in a sure try by the ball striking an enthusiastic admirer of tho game, just as the player was übout to touch down. Owiug to the darkness tho concluding quarter of an hour was very uncertain, tho spectators beiug scarcely able to seo the ball when the i play was in the centre of the field. The play does not call for special comment. The plucky manner in. which the losers stuck to their work drew forth repeated cheers from the spectators, who appeared able to give praise whether tho player was a visitor or a local man,
