CORRESPONDENCE.

lOTHEEDIIOB, Sir—l had occasion lately to deny in public tho authorship of a disparaging remark that appeared about a Government surveyor. I am now somewhat reluctantly compelled to do similarly. For from tho, remarks of a correspondent of yours signing himself " Cyclops," it is easy to see that his shafts are aimed a|i myself and ■partners., if not by name, hut what is less creditable, by inuendo. In justice to myself I have now to state that I have nothing to do with the correspondence that has been appear-

ing lately, and must express me regret that both sides should havy carried the matter so far, I may, in passing, inform "Cyclops," as he •appears- ignorant of the fact that ijOMji and efaidir are not one and the same thing. I am not ashamed to own that I have been a party to applying to Government for a piece of • land for a fencing Iks, at th 'Oovirnment's rvm nlmiicn. Nor yet .when another applicant prevented the GoTernment panting the applim- ■ ■tion,am I ashamed .to. have been &•,;• party to requesting that the said-piety'.' of land be weighted with the value of the improvements made theron iy wy« self, and partners. Apparently- in " Cyclops" perverted opinion, Tom, Dick, or Harry, should have the of these improvements. I have no hesitation in characterising " Cyclop's" letter in the Daily of the 19th inst., as spitefully wide of tho truth, and I now warn tho writer that unlsss he ■ is moro careful in tho future, I shall apply the proper remedy for such con* duct.

On reflection I have decided to call upon your correspondent "Cyclops" to disolose his nanioaud prove bis assertion '.darning compensation for improve' mmis thy never made, 'or tpndor.-an amplo apology to Macquarrio Brothers for the slanderous assertion... Failing which I ask you Sir to favor me with " Cyclops" name and address. lam&c, Cuab Macqtjabme. AUredlon, 80th May 1887. :
