THE TRIAL.
[united .'press, association] ■ Ghmstciiukch, April 13. -A large crowd . assembled at the Supreme Court this morning, when 'the-- cases' against Dr Russell, Mrs Bowern, and Isabella Wilson were .brought on. Mrs Bowein, who was iii mourning,' anil appeared to feel her position keenly, being in tears, pleaded guilty to procuring a miscarriage on herself in January, 1886. Dr Russell, who was somewhat thinner and paler than ■when arrested, pleaded not guilty in a firm voice'to the charges of procuration inihe.casesof Kate' Fisher iii. December, i'j)Bo, and of Mary Bowem. The three prisoners pleaded not guilty to tlie'cliarge of procuration' in regard to.Annie Connolly. Mi' Justice Johnston said lip' would defer sentence' ; on Mrs Bowern till after hearing the 'evidence in the other cases- against her. The case against Dr. Russell was -first' taken, and after hearing the evidence, the jury retired at 4;80 p-.'m., and; 58 minutes later, returned with a verdict of guilty. His .honor deferred passing' sentence till after the hearing of the other cases, wlrichare to be taken tomorrow.
