London, March 17. . , At a Liberal banquet last night Mr Gladstone made a speech in which he stated that ,he was'anxious that a reasonable understanding should , be arrived at between tho: Unionists and his followers,' He said he would adhere to the main part of his proposals for the sottlement of the • Irish question, and hoped an agreement was possiblo regarding necessary modification'and improvements in the laws of Ireland, especially in connection with land; but he deprecated any haste in regard to Home Rule, as the nation would gradually come round to his views on the question, It is announced that the first meeting of the Imperial Conference will be held at the Foreign Office on the 4th April, when the Marquis of Salisbury and other Ministers mil be present. Subsequent meetings will be held till 7 : th proximo, when the Conference will be adjourned till the 15th. The Due D'Aumale has forwarded £SOO for the Imperial Institute, as a mark of his attachment to the Queen. The Colonial delegates to the Imperial Conference have been elected honarary members of the Carlton Club. Mr Mac Minnie has been appointed Professor of Husbandry to the Adelaide University, It is announced that the Inprinl Government has prepared an extensive Bcheme for colonial defence, which will be submitted to the colonies represented at the approaching Imperial Conference. Roue, March 17. General Saletta has been appointed to succeed General Gene as commander of the station forces at Massowah.
