Dorset: Treasurer, W. C. Buchanan; Starter, John Drummond; Handicappers, The Stewards; Clerk of Scales, N. Grace;, Timekeeper, W. O. Williams; Clerk of Course, O. Tieehurst; Secretary, R. R, Armstrong. With their ÜBual luck the Spring Meeting of the above Club was commenced yesterday under adverse circumstances which mitigated greatly against the attendance. The stormy evening on Monday would act as a deterrent to those' coming in from the back country, and the high wind and driving showers of yesterday morning helped a great many to make up their minds not to risk the day for outdoor amusements. The collapse of the
Waingawa Railway Bridge prevented the otherwise bi> crowd from Ma'sterton, hs.largo uumberfl had selected the Greytown course as the place to spend the day, and the railway as tho means of transit. There were from three hundred and fifty to four hundred on tlie course, the grand stand being liberally patronised by ladies. The high wind that prevailed during the greater part of the day made things vory uncomfortable, and those privilege holders who had canvas covers either had to take them in or get them blown away. The Groytown Band enlivened tho proceedings by some wellrendered selections, the progress the band has made lately reflects great credit on the leader, Mr M. Varnham. The inner man was well catered for, Mr A. L. Whyto having the stand luncheon room, and Messrs McGlashan and Grigg the outside booths. Mr Hammerich had the stand bar, and Mr Jones the outside booth for dispensing alcoholic and tornperanco beverages. There was a large posse of police, mounted and otherwise, under the command of Sergeant Price, but the well behaved gathering gave them an opportunity to enjoy themselves, The course and surrounding were in capital order, and the whole of the official work went off smoothly. Mr McFarlane had a new totaliaahor at work, which put through £770 during the day, the biggest dividend boing L 4 16 on Walkover in the hack hurdles. Freebooter managed to win the Handicap Hurdles after almost spoiling his chance by running off. Mr Tancred's raking gelding The Spy, by Hornby-Bribery, took the Trial Stakes and Moroa Handicap, and the little wonder, First; Water, again proved her speed and staying power in the Biithday Handicap, which she won rather easily, although she had to bo wakened up on entering the straight before she could shake off the game Rumour. The lar-' gest field was in the hack race when fifteen faced the starter, Mr T. Ray's Satanella with a 3st 101b jockey up got to the front and was never collared, the favorite, Theodore being delayed at the post, and was unable through the field nearer than third place. Tho following are the events, and the order in which they were run.

Only the abovo trio started. The flag fell to an even etart, and Halicore led slightly over the first hurdle, Acme refusing. The pair took the socond jump together, and Freebooter led by the stand. _ At the third impediment Freebooter jumped over the inside corner, striking the hurdle, Halicoro taking it cleanly. Freebooter had to return, having gone inside a post, and this gave Gravestock a long lead he should have taken advantage of. The black horse when once on the course again soon commenced to reduce the roan's lead, whioh was only about eight lengths at the fourth jump. At the fifth obstacle Vennel had reduced the gap to about two lengths, and a desperate struggle took place up to the last obstacle, amid cries of "Freebooter's pumped," and to all appearances the black horse was in difficulties. Vennell however got to work, and brought bis oharge up with a terrific rush, passed Hahcore in the jump and won after a game struggle by about half a longth. A protest wbb entered by Mr McKenzie on the ground that Freebooter never jumped the third hurdle, but the Stewards after consideration did not sustain it. Time 3min. 20secs. After a little delay, owing to the anxiety of the jockeys to get away, and one false start, the field was despatched well together. Princess Royal immediately commenced to make tho pace, Scrub and Rata keeping the roan mare company, Rumour having charge of the of the second division, evidently watohM Firatwater. Passing the stand Scrub was slightly in advance of Princess Royal, Rata, Rumour, Smooth, and Firstwater following iivthe order named. The field than began to close up, and on rounding into the back stretch Rata gavo up the ghost. Along the back Princess Royal had wrested the lead from Scrub, Rumor and Firstwater being in close attendance, Smooth out of it. Firstwater now challenged the leaders, and soon had the premier position, and on rounding into the straight had a strong lead. Rumor now made her effort, and passed Scrub and Princess Royal and went for the leader, but on Firstwater being shook up she came away, and won by about two lengths with plenty in hand, Scrub being a good third. At half the distance Honeysuckle dropped back, leaving the Scrub and the Spy to fight it out.
