CORRESPONDENCE.
THE TAUERU POUND. . (To the Editor.) Sik— Please insert tho following:— Some of the knowing ones at the Lower Taueru fancy they aro doing a good turn to the public and fancy thoy are giving good advice to tho County Council in agitating for the enlarging of tho coveted spot known as the pound. 1 should fancy myself, gentlemen that hold a seat in tho Council with tho public interest to look to, could see through such an opon spun web. In the first place the would-bo ranger has generally as many head of mixed stock running on the road as any others about the Taueru, if not by day they can be seen there by night, I am given to understand that if the Council do not agree to pay them to enlarge it, or shift it nearer home, they intend to do it for nothing. I should advise keeping them in suspense a bit longer, and they might offer to pay for the lease. They have an appointed poundkeeper at tho. Taueru, and he has had ten horses in charge during' the last three years. Why not ask fot leave to run stock on the road free; with authority to pound stock belonging to other people, and not shuffle about dictating to those who can seelthe whole thing through from end to end? ', If. they want the liltlo piece of land attached to the yard, put a good face on the matter, and offer a price'for it for. a terui. I believe they have mentioned to the Council that tho'• present pound-keeper is loaving the district,' Supposing such Jto be the caso, I fancy he knows his duty to
the Council bettor than to leave it tl (his would-be successors). tr/sehdln' hlß' resignation for him. 1 believe his term ;. with the Council has neatly expired! but I suppose that is an affair that: doe rt'pt concern* them. What with tired and ■ pound-keeping, I fancy a valuable Iddi- ' tion to the County Council could be flund at the Lower. Taueru, Hoping I have; not. intruded too far on your valuable spate, '. '' lam, etc., ),'."
