CRICKET.

The Tradesman s Cricket Club opened the season on Saturday with a match against the Opaki Club on the Oval. The ground was rather soft and heavy, and tho wither was anytime but favorable for cricket being cold and showoiy. The Tradesmen captained by E. Mmilie were the first to handle, tho willow, but through the underhand bowling of R, Welch, who took five wickets, they only managed to compile thirty-bur imia. Of these Philpott made ten, and J. Williams eight (not out). Opaki made a very poor •show in their first innings, there being no less than seven" ducks eggs," and they failed to gut within seven of their oppononts score, liwnigtou and Williams truridliii" very effectively. The Tradesmen fared a little better in their second innings puttin" together thirty ■ six, Philpot, sixteen", being again top scorer. With fifty-four to win, Opaki wont in for their second innings, and through the hard hitting of W. Day who made twenty-four, J. Welch ten, they managed to make (ifty-threo, the match resulting in a tie, Williams again doing most destruction with the leather. The fielding was not milch to boast about, soma of the players boing very lax, especially among the Tradesmen, but this, no doubt, will improve with the season, Blinkliorno behind the wicket showed very good form, and kept the byes down. Philpot proved a very good allround man, showing fair defence and free hitting, especially to the leg. He made tho hit of the day to lo« for five, and also bowled fairly well in the second innings. Ewington and J. Williams divided the honors in bowling for the Tradesmen, both of them being well on. For Opaki, F. and R. Welch proved themaelvos the most capable bowlers, though Boulcott managed to get thiee wickets in the first innings. As W. Day made thirty-two out of a total of seventy-eight, there is not much to say about the other batsmen, except that J. Welch made ten in the second .innings. Messrs J.
