The following interesting ovonts took placc'duriiigarccent meeting, whiclnvo clip from the Hawkes Bay papors:—An event for descision was the pket de reswtaws of tho day—tho Hawkes Bay Guinoas-and it must be said that (.ho win turned up in a perfect surprise not only to tho general public, but to tho stable and owner of Foreßtor, As tho horsos wore weighed out and saddled up thoy woro subjected to a large amount of scrutiny from tho public, so much so that tho otawards of tho club ordorcd ft parado of those engagod. The one that camo in for the greatest show of attention was Galatea, who appropriated tho Nursery Handicap and Juvenile Plato with so much ease in March last. Next to her came Huata, but, as before stated, tho winner turned up in the little thought of Forester, tho hot favorite never being in tho hunt. Tho race throughout was a protty scone, and must bo voted the bc3t contestod Guineas yot soon on the Hastings course.
Before tho first race was run on tho second, the Stewards met to discuss tho omission on tho part Mr I. 11. Hill in not scratching Tornado for tho Flying Handicap of the previous day. After hoaring the circumstances they vory justly decided to inflict only the nominal penalty of £l. Tho noxt case brought before tho stewards was that of a man named Murtagh, who was charged with attempting to "ring" in a ticket on forestor for tho Guineas yesterday on the irtsido machine. The decision in this case lyas postponed. Later in tho day the stewards again met and lined Mr Hollis, the owner of Kangaroo, £1 for putting up the wrony colors, and the jockoy Smith, who rode the horse, was also fined £1 tor not weighing in.
Shortly bcfure the Scurry Stakes a deal ofamusoinont was caused by tho announcement that Mr Martin had decided to put his" feather" weight up on Tho Arrow in that event. During the process of saddling up the " leather," who is named A. Banks, and is commonly known as "Tho Bruiser," was the subject of a great deal of good-natured curiosity, This diminutive specimen of humanity weighs exactly 4st 141b, and ho looked more liko a doll on tho back of The Arrow than a living being. As he left the paddock he was given three ringing cheors, and many hearty good wishes went up for his maiden mount. During the race a continual laughter went up from all parts of the ground as tho boy led the field, and whon challenged by Normanby on coming into tho straight ho plied the whip so vigorously that The Arrow Bhot clean away, winning easily. On reaching tho paddock "Tho Brusier" received quite an ovation, cheer after cheer being raised in his honor. In front of a totalisator four gentlemen were discussing tin; propriety of clubbiug a crown a piece to back an outsider. Three agreed ; one would uot; result', one of the throe gontluiuen took two shares. The ticket was on forester I
Some people are born lucky. Yestorterday a resident put a ticket on the inside machine on Forester, and theu went to tho outsido machine to put a pound on another outsider. By some mistake, probably his own, ho got a ticket on Forester, not the outsider ho meant to back, and thus at night ho was £7O richer than he should have been but for his luck.
