The Hawke'a Bay Jockey Club's spring meeting takes place to-day and to-mor-row. The priucipal event is the Hawke's Bay Guineas of 260 sovs, with a sweep of 10 aovs for acceptors nddod, Jur this nine have accepted, amoug thorn being Mr P. F. Tancrod's oheanut colt Foroßter, by Puriri-Gosflip. Tho iuosfc likely one to catch the judge's drat- iu thin event is tho colt Cremorne, by Cadogau—Miss Lama, who recently won tho Suburban Plate of 80 sors, uiiloa, at tho Otaliau Racing Club's meeting, carrying 7at-71bs una beating five others iu the easiest manner possible. In the Selling Raco of 100 sovs Mr .Tanored's Normanoy is among tho acceptor*, aud in the Flying Handicap of 125 Bovb Mr T, H. Hill has Pasha, Bat lllbs, and Tornado Cat lOlbs. To-morrow's races commence with the Maiden Plate of GO sovs for which thoro aro fifteen nominated, Forestor being among the number. The event of tie meeting follows via. the Spring Handicap of 300 sovs, 1$ miles. For this there are twenty acceptors, anions; which are four Wairarapa representatives —Administrator flat (top weight), PaSha Bst 111b, Normanby Oat 81b, Tornado 6st 71b. This is considered a very open event, and after tho running in tho Park Stakes Haudicap, 1$ miles, last Friday will be looked forward to with interest by the sporting fraternity. The Park Stakes was won by Silence, fat 91b, Marion Bat 61b second, Rivulot, fist 41b, third, Ad' uiinistrator, whe was carrying top weight, 9st 21b, was novor in the race and finished eighth. In to-morrow's race the roan carries 21b less, but Silence with a 51b penalty will only have to carry • fat 41b, Marion Bst 21b, wliile Rivulet goes up 41b, such is the glorious uncertanty of handicapping. The difference between tho two Handicaps is vory marked and whon - it is taken into consideration that tho distances are the same and races ocouring within fivo days of each other, tho queation way be well asked "Is it not advisable to have one handicapper for all the principal evonts of the colony, iiißtead of ieavmg the moat important mattor to local sports, who, us ut rule, know nothing about horses or raoing outside their own immediate district ?"
From the Hawke's Bay Herald of Friday, last we take the following bettinp quotations "VVaifciri has been well backed fur the New Zealand Cup at 100 to 8, For tho Hurdle and Spring Handicaps of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club 100 to B'has been accepted about' Belle and 'Waitiri, and the same price was taken about Denbigh and Pasha. For the Flying and Spring Handicaps 100 to 8 was acceptod about Miss Dargon and Pearl, Miss Dargon and Pasha, and Miss Dargon and. Waitiri. We notice by the Post that three jookoy# were injured in the hurdle race at the Napier Park Spring meeting on Friday last. Barnes, who rodo Ravensw»od was rolled over by his horse when on the ground, and was insensible when picked up. Farrell, who had tho mount on BretHarte, sustained a fracturo of tho collarbone, and Rollo, who fell with Tho Bard, loceived a kick in the groin. Curiously onough, when the accident occurred there was not a single doctor on the ground, and one had to be fetched by special messenger from Taradale.
