Cable Rates.
(United Phess Association.) Wellington, this day. In connection with the proposed increase of cable rates, the following cable- ■ grams have been received from the superintendent of the company at Wakapua : " Wakapua, September 30. " The following is a copy of the cable received by the chairman of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company from Sir Julius Vogel on 27th: 'ln reply to yours of 24th, you apparently have not' considered the consequenoes of raising tho tariff. The Governments can cease to. provide the present accommodation at the terminus, whoro they are nmv treating you with great genorosity. Clause 13 also gives power to charge for the use of land lines by terminal rates or otherwise, or wo can leave you to collect your own telegrams and monies. Wo give you now in every way great aid; in fact, virtually do the major portion of your business for you, saving you large expenses. Wo consider the intention of the contract.was that the tariff should not be raised, and advise you to withdraw the proposal,'"
The following telegram has been sent by the chairman of the Eastern Extension Australasia and China Telegraph Company to Sir Julius Vogol: " London, Sepb, 28. "Have received your telegram. Wo are acting upon the highest logal advice and have a perfect right to raise the tariff. You are bound to give us ollico accommodation for ten years from the expiration of tho subsidy, New South Wales was prepared to renew the subsidy for ten years, You-obtained the sanction of your Parliament to renew for five years, but declined to carry it into effect. The advantages which you statu we enjoy are far from making up fur the heavy loss we sustain by working the traffic at the present rates. There really ought to be no difficulty in coming to a satisfactory arrangement. You complain of not having received legal notice. Wo have told you throughout our correspondence, extending over eighteen months, that unless tho subsidy was renewed tho tariff would have to be raised, Now, to prevent all misunderstanding, aud to satisfy the Telegraph Company of New Zealand and of the other colonies, the company will postpone raising tho tariff until the Ist of January next, if you choose to reconsider the proposals, with a viow to an amicable arrangement."
