[United Press Association) Wellington, this day. Communications are passing with the Postmaßter-Goueral of New South Wales with reference to the proposed increase of cable rates, and it is understood that a reply, has been sent to the manager of the cable company by tho N.Z. Government, but tho nature of the reply has not been allowed to be made public. It is not by any means certain that the company will find it desirable to make an increase in the tariff, a'hd at any rate it does not appear they can legally do so on the Ist October, as tho International office has Bent no notice, and the convention regulations require a notice of 15 days, White Island was in active eruption on Saturday. The poople of Whakatane at three "o'clock on that day observed vast columns of smoke and steam blown into the air some hundreds of feet. No danger was apprehended, as fortunately the wind was from the west.
