WAIRARAPA POULTRY, PIGEON, AND CANARY SOCIETY.
President;' Hugh H, Beetham; Vice- ; President; Thos. Parsons; Committee: R. Bright, T. Dixon, A, Elkins, L, J. Hooper, w. G. King, J. D. Oakly, D. S. PapworHi, M, Wilton ; Hon, Secretary and Treasurer: W. McKenzie : Judges : Poultry, A. Walker, Pigeons, Burton Boys, Canaries, A Styles. ■ Tub second annual show of the Society was held in the Theatre Royal, Musterton yesterday afternoon and evening, and from every point of view proved highly .successful. There was a considerable increase in the number of entries in poultry, and the quality was a good deal ahead of last year's show. Thoiigty there waß iio increase in canaries and pigeons, the quality of the birds was really good. The jud,;e of poultry, Mr A. Walker, of Ohristchurch, hud a most arduous task, but ho proved equal to the occasion, and his decisions gave general satisfaction. The largest exhibitors were Messrs Elkins, M, Wilton, W. G. King, and McKenzie and Bright,in poultry, Mr W. Ourtis making a big show in pigeons and canaries, Mr R,. Evans, of Ohristchurch, ruuning him very close in the latter class, in
DORKINGS. There was a fair show, but as several of the pens were wrongly classed only two prizes were awarded. The strong point of the show was no doubt the • Hameuruh. ' In Golden Spangled Mr A. Elkins carried off first prize with a very handsome pair; Messrs Galloway and Nicol coming, next with excellent birds. In' Golden Pencilled there was very strong competition, and . the judge said the class as a whole was better than anything ho had seen,. even at Ohrittohurch. Mr Sydney Smith, of Wellington, took first place with a well matched pair, though a bit dnw. ' The socond and third birds were also very good, Silver Spangled were well represented, M. Wilton's pair carried, off first place, and the cock will make a grand bird if his comb does not grow too large and go over. The others were rather indifferent, the spangling being too small. Silver Pencilled wero represented by two rather poor pens. BLACK SfiSBH Were good as a whole, the hen of the first prize pen being a magnificent fowl. Mr P. C, Andorson took Ist and 2nd. The combs of the cocks in the other two pens Were too large, and had gone over slightly. ANMIUSUNS Though fine large birds were not a first rate lot, the earlobes in the whole of them being badly splashed with red; HOUPAJiS. In this class the first priie fell to Mr Elkins for a'fine pair, the others calling [for no special comment. In young birds there was only one entry. These had food white leges, this point gaining them the award,
LiNGSHW, 111 this class there was a fine display, Mr Elkina took first prise with, a grand cock, the hen being rather indifferent. Messrs Harrison and Perry took second with a pair that will furnish into fine fowls, but rather young to compete against old birdß. In .the young class Dr Husking took first and second with vary nice hens. The third prize pair were also good, but the cock had rather much tail. The show in this-class was was a good one all round. All the prize birds under twelve months came from the stock of Messrs Harrison and Perry. We understand these- breeders, with a view of securing some new blood in the district, are importing somo birds ot a fresh etraiii. GAME. In Mac 1 ! reds Mr Styles gob first award with a pair a long way ahead of anything else. The only pair of brown reds shown were also very gaod, and the same may be said of the prize Duckwings and Pile. COCHINS. Mr W. 6. King carried all before him in these classes.- His buff birds, with the exception of the cock, being a bit heavily hocked, and the hen a little faulty in the hackle, wet'e splendid birds. DAEK BBAHJUS were rather an indifferent lot and call for 110 special attention. LIGHT BUHMAS. In this class there was a splendid exhibition which ms a decided credit to the district. In both classes Mr L. J. Hooper securod the highest awards with magnificent birds. TIIO third prize in under twelve months fell to a grandly made pair, and if the cock had uofc been bo heavily hocked, and better in tho head, ho would, no doubt, have been placed higher in tho list. WHITE LEGHORNS With the exception of tho prizetakors (both Mr A. Clarke's), the others were not up to oxhibitiori standard. The first prize hen was especially good. BROWS LEGHORNS, Competition in this class was stron?. The first prize fell to Mr C, Simmonds for a fine pair. The rest of the awards fell to Messrs McKenzie and Bright. The whole of the Brown Leghorns exhibited were from the stock of the latter exhibitors, and the judge expressed himself highly pleased with the whole of them. GOLDEN SPANGLED ?OLAND. ' Mr Elkins took first and second with ■very nice birds, the.first prize pair' beinc exceptionally good. PLYMOUTH HOOKS were a fair lot, the majority of the awards falling tj Messrs MoKenzio and Bright. Mr King took first in the old class, the nock being from the .stock of the. formm* breeders. GEESE, Mr Kin? took first with a nice pair o* Toulouße, Mr Billingtou staining a third place. DUCKS. In this class the exhibition was rather poor, most of the pons being out of conditio}). TURKEYS, There was only one exhibit, for which Mr Billington was awarded a first prize for a very nice pen. COOK SHOWN SINGLY. Mr F, J, W, Fear took first and second with White and Brown Leghorns, both being fine birds. The third fell to a nice Plymouth' Rock exhibited by Mr J. Bagge. .. HEN SHOWN SINGLY. The first fell to Mr Elkins for a grand Buff Cochin pullet, .Mr Fear getting second with a Brown Leghorn, and the third falling to Mr Kirk for a fifle stamp .of a Dark Brahma. CAGE BIRDS. ' : v In this class, there was not much compete. Mr W. Smart took first and second for N.Z. paroquets, Mrs Holloway first for a cockatooj and Mr J. Oullinane first for a parrot. - • PIGEONS. In pigeons there was not much competition, but the quality of the birds was
oxoeptlonal, Mr W. L. Curtis had pretty well hit own way, and to;ik a large number of prizes, CANABIES, In this class also the. quality of the birds was aboye the average. Messrs Ourtis aiid R. Evans took most of the awards.
