MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night. Present— The Mayor and Crs Perry, Chamberlain, Gapper, Hessey, Mason,"Heron, Muir, Williams and Cullen. ■ CORRESPONDENCE. From 0. E. Cook, Auckland, re stone, breaking machine. From H. Wilton, Bideford, objecting to the Waipoua river diversion. From H. S. Wardell, complaining of the state of the footpath opposite his residence.
From Wellington Harbour Board, thanking the Council for their action. From J. Payton &00. ye Albert-st dam. Prom G. S. W, Dalrymple, enclosing a letter froin the lessee 01 the Theatre Royal, complaining of unlicensed buddings. From G, Beetham, stating that tho petition of Mr VVoodroofe and othor ratepayers to lessen the size of the Borough, came too late in the session to be dealt with. • ■ From certaiu ratepayers in Dixon-st., complaining of the disgraceful state of that street. From T. Barker, utating that the chimney in the house ocoupied by Mr Pelling in Perry's block was defective, and dangerous to.tho surrounding property. DEFECTIVE FIDE. Re the report from tho Captain of the Fire Brigade in respect to a defective chimney in Perry's block. It was resolved that a copy of the letter be sent to Mrß.'P. Perry, the owner Of the property. DDCOJMIREIT. The complaint oi certain ratepayers of the disgraceful state of Dixon-street was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. UNHOBNBEP BUILDINGS. A letter from tho leasee of the Theatre was discussed. One of the places c»mplained of was an auction room in which a weekly dance was held and another was the Wesleyao Church. Tickets now were stated to be selling for an entertainment about to take place there. The Mayor pointed, out that holding concerts in a place of worship was illegal, and these buildings were not constructed with a view to a speedy exit in case of alarm. Cr Gapper moved that the attention of the Trustees of the Wesleyan Church be drawn to the complaint and to point out that they wore rendering themI selves liable to a fine.
' Cr Perry' seconded the motion pro form, and said the same objection might apply to Worshippers. Cr Williams thought the motion was useless, If the Weßleyan body broke the law they would have to take the consequences, A division was taken and the motion was carried on the casting vote ot the Mayor.
ALBEIT-STREEI DAM. The Mayor moved that the complaint of Mr Pay ton be referred to the Works Committee. Or Gapper • moved as an amendment that a copy of the letter be sent to Mr Carey requesting him to abate the nuisance. Or Mason seconded. The araendmont was carried on a division. LINCOLN ROAD. The complaint of Mr Wardell of the state of Lincoln road was referred to the Works Committae. WAIPOUA RIVER. The caution of Mr H. Wilton was laid on tho table. STONE BREAKING MACHINE. No action was taken on the question of procuring a stone crusher. LIBRARY COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The Council went into Committee of the whole to consider the Library Committee's report,. which was that there wore thirty applicants for th# office of Librarian, and they recommended eight names. Ballot was takenj and Mrs Riley (the late Custodian) received the appoinbtuenb. The Council then resumed ordinary business, and their action in Committee .'was confirmed. ' BYE-LAWS, The bye-laws Committee's report was read.and adopted, as follows,— . " The Town Cllerk was directed to draft a by-law to prevent any horses or cattle being driven, led,-or permitted on any footpath .in tho Borough. It was resolved to recommend That the question of licensing slaughter-houses be dealt with when tho. whole bye-laws are revised, and that a revision of the byelaws bo taken when the new Corporations Act comes into force. The question of fees on publio buildings, was adjourned."
OAS'QOMMinEK, , The Gas Committea reported plans of & Station Governor House was submitted and it was resolved that Mr Dawson's offer to erect a building in brick and conorote for £lB ba accepted. That tenders be called for Works Committee shed and outbuildings, That L and T. Burk's draft for £798 9s lid ba paid. Wages amounting to £9 8s 3d were passed for payment! The Engineer was instructed to engage no workmon unless first authorised by the Committee. That the Station master be asked to unload.'and stack, gas pipes. That Mr Cottreij be authorised to employ a compliant person to test , the pipes &c., at a cost not exceeding 10s per day. .Plans .of small buildings were approved., ' . Cr Gappor reported haviiig had &n offerof a hand cart from'Mr Oleghorn, whiclt the Engineer said would be suitable aud was required for the gas works; Ho' lm-1 • consequently arranged to purchase it for' £6, and asked for the committees approval, . ' . ... The action of Cr Gapper was oonfirmed. That 5 tons of opal be ordered from, the Brunner Coal Company and .quota; tions be obtained for from 25 to 301 tons from different dealers. .
