A deputation of about a dozen ratepayers waited on the Board in reference to the rate which the Board was about to levy'. Messrs Maunsell and Perry were the spokesmon. Mr Maunsell thought it would be more politic to forego some of the proposed works till times were more flourishing, as he considered that owing to the depressed state of the country a fd rate was more than the ratepayers were enabled to bear. Mr Perry corroborated what Mr Maunsell had Baid, and asked that the Board would defer the striking of the rate till they had tho opinion of the ratepayers generally on the question.-The Chairman and Mr Booth replied to the deputation, and pointed out the folly it would be to cripple the Board just for the sake of saving a trifle in their rates, while there were back settlers who had not got roads to fetch their produce to the markets, and pointed out that most of the Wards had overdrawn, and wore in dobt, and consequently would be in a still worse position at the end of the year if they attempted to make shift with a \i in the £ rate,
Mr Braithwaito moved, and Mr J. Rayiior seconded, that the question of levying the rate be adjourned, Mr Jatneß Stevens moved an amendment, and Mr E. W. 'Dorset seconded, that a rate of f in the £ bo levied on all rateable property in the Road Board district. The motion was lost and the amendment carried.
Mr Stevens speaking on the amendment said that ho did not sue any of tho ratepayers of his ward present, and ho was quite sura that a fd.rate was nono too much to do tho work required m his ward. The deputation then withdrew.
