WHAREAMA ROAD BOARD.
The first meeting of the' Board was held at the residence of Mi\ Isaac Cripps on Friday'last. Present— Messrs J. C. Yallanee, John Morrison, Edwin Meredith, R. R. Meredith, and George Moore. The Returning officer having announced the names of members elected to con-, stitute the new Board, Mr Georgo Moore was elected Chairmen, and Mr John Morrison treasurer.
Mr Cripps, on being interviewed re future office accommodation, offered the use of a room gratis, which was accepted. The following resolutions were passed ; That applications for the office of Clerk be invited for one year, applicants to state at what rate, per meetiug, they will undertake the duties. ' That the office hours of the Board be the hours of Bitting at the meetings which may be held. That .the acting Clerk be authorized to collect the books and other stationary necessary for office purposes.
' That the Chairman and Treasurer be appointed a Committee to interview the Managur of the, Bank of . Hew South Wales, with the view, of opening the Board's account at the office of the Bank in Masterton.
That the advertisements of the Board be inserted in the Wairarapa Star. That the Board at its next meeting strike a rate of fths of a penny in the £ on the value of the rateable property within the district for the .financial year ending 31st March 1887, and that all rfltes above £5 shall be paid in two instalments, the first payable , on the 30th day of June,and the second on the 31st December, 1885, and that all rates not exceeding £5 payable iu one sum on the 31st June next.
That all resolutions proposed by members of the Board shall be in writing, and shall be signed by the proposer and seconder before boing dealt with by the Chairman; That the members to retire in terms of Section 3, "an Act to amend the Road Board Act, 1882," shall be determined by drawing lots at the ordinary meeting next preceeding the meeting in May, 1887. Mr E, Meredith gave notice of the following motion :— 1 " That not loss than frds of the rates raised in each subdivision shall be oxpimded' within such subdivision, and that the principle bo recocnised of consulting the wishes of the respective ratepayers as to tho application of such frds of his or her rates," It was resolved that copies of Mr Morediths notice of motion re tho expenditure of rates within the subdivisions, bo forwarded to each member of the Board. The Chairman drew tho attention of the Board to the fact that the section of the Amendment Act relating to tho ballot for retiring of members was of a Jtringent nature, and likely to involve complication. The acting clerk was instructed to Inform the roadman—Mr Pederßen—that owing to the financial position of the Board, they would be unable to offer him employment,
The next meeting was appointed to be held on Saturday, the 26th June next, at lla.m,
The Board then adjourned.
