Notwithstanding the many counter attractions in the way of football, Volunteer review, excursions, &c„ about four hundred persons patronised the abovo raceß yesterday on the Olareville course, and were rewarded with some sport, although the meeting was considerably robbed of its pleasantness by protests, ■ which prolonged theraces until it became too dark to run the Consolation Handicap, which was consequently abandoned. The crowd was a very orderly one, Sergeant Price and his men having nothing to do beyond stopping the illegal games. A " book," limited to half-crown bets, was opened for the speculative by an enterprising individual, but through the scant support accorded on the opening raco, the business was suspended. One sport, not to be done, played his game, and cjave the winners all of the stakes, with tho inßinuative remark "You give ma] what you like, gentlemen," and many wero the black lookshe treated his customers to when the gift was less than about 25 per cynt of the pool. One of Mr A, MoFarlane's totalisators, under the management of Mr A. L. Webster, was on the ground, and put through the sum of £473, the largest dividend being on Revoke in the Birthday Handicap, the amount being £5 2s, Mr E. Buckeridgo had the control of the liquor trade, and Mr A. L. Whyte of the nioro solid refreshments, the lattor's usual liberality releiving a substantial recognition from the visitors, while the excellence of the former's beverages could be estimated by tho convival' manner of those present, without the usual drunks. As Fat as the work was concerned, the Qj&rala did their utmost to secure tho 't&aeasft of the meeting, and but for the : unavoidable protests, it would have ranked among one of their most success-. ful No one can with justice condemn thafr action in impounding the amount in the totalisator on tho Clareville Handicap ($133) pending enquiries being made to higher authorities over a question as to what constitutes foul riding, An unnecessary amount of feeling was introduced into this affair, especially by those holding tickets on the two horses under protest, via,, Normanby and Okato, and as the question is yet under consideration, wo will refrain from giving anything more than a description of the race. The following are the events and the order in which they were run. Handicap Hurdle Race of 30 sovs; second horse to receive 5 sovs from the stakes, 1} miles; over six flights of hurdles 3ft Din high. The first attempt to send them away was a failure, Rollo's trainer thought it was a start and let his charge go resulting in Mr llacara'B colt galloping a mile and a half before he coidd be stopped. When the horses were once more in line the starter dfoppedhis fl ag| Mo having ton lengthß of it, in fact they wero racing .Mote ho was lot go, Skinner on Okato leafltng the field. As they entered the etrsgfct, Rollo had made up all his lost gtfiancL and rawd past the stand abreast of the gray horse, the latter having a Pethe beat of it. Bounding the top turn Mlowasstriding evenly with Okato the latter still well in hand. The pace improved near the Clareville road, and Vaile took closer order on Revoke. Mo was first round Feist's corner and led along the lower bend. Loud cries of "Hollo," "Rollo" heralded his Jlead into the straight, but here Vaile joined issue on Revoke, aud despite her big weight Mr Tancred's handsome filly soon brought Walter Buckcridgo to (ho whip, and although Rollo answered gamely enough, the dual gallop was too much for him. Half way up the straight Skiner brought Okato up again, but Revoke would not bo denied, and won by half a length, Rollo a good third, Satanella fourth, the pony First Water with her Bst 41b last. Vailo'e patient riding of the top weight was a treat as she il a jady 'baggage and never shows a partiality fora distance The time, 2 min 59jsecs must, be taken in conjunction with the ground which was very holding. Okato maintained his lead along the back of the course when Rollo came up to Becond place, and- by tho tirao Feist's corner was reached the colt's nostras in front of Okato, with RevW' lying third.
