William Joseph Gamblin was charged, on the information of William'Cullen, of Masterton, agent for the Singer Manufacturing Company, for that' he-being the' bailee of a sewing machine value £5, the property of tho company, between' the 26th April and the 3rd May, did fraudulently convert the same to his own use.
Mr Gray for the informant, Mr Skipper for the accused.
It having been explained to the defendant by the Bench that he could," if he chose, be tried by jury, he elected to have the case dealt with summarily, The evidence of William Cullen and Thomas Johnston having been taken relative to the hiring of the machine to the accused and the sale oi it to Johnston the Cotrt retired to come to its decision, • and on resuming its sitting the defendant was informed that, having taken all the circumstances of the case into consideration, and the informant having expressed a desire that the case should be dealt with leniently, the prisoner was sentenced to forty-eight hours' imprisonment, with hard labor, in the Greytown lock-up.
