SUPREME COURT.
(United Press Association.)
Blenheim, JMay 6. •'■ The sittings of the above Court opened to-day. before Justice Richmond, whoso charge'. contained nothing of special interest, He considered the calendar of six cases heavy for Marlborough.'The; singular circumstances in the' case for attempted rape against Collett, "\ jockey, were referred to by His Honor. Since prisoner was committed for trial'he 'had married prosecutrix, His Honor said he had never heard of such a case before, but marriage was not in itself condonation or defenco-to a charge which affected the law and the community at'large, as well.asthe parties immediately concerned;', The Grand Jury found a-true bill against; Collett, who was-put on his trial. The evidence clearly established, the Charge,. accused having admitted it" and pleaded that he had been engaged to the girl two years, and committed the offence when drunk, after the races. His Honor directed the'jury, that although the subsequent, marrying was somewhat in accused's favor, the man was not. justified in forcing the woman to whom he was engaged, Thoy' had to consider the consequences if he had not married heir after all, and regard must ; be had to the gross outrage on publio, clecency. 'Prisoner was:found guilty, and 1 received a sentence of three months. John Rose, a lad of.seventeen, is now being tried for rape.
