MR BALLANCE AND TAWHIAO.

TAWHIAO OFFERED A SEAT IN ." THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

(United Press Association,) Alexandra, this day. • A meeting took place to-day between Mr Ballance and Tawhiao. There were present Rewi, Towheoro, Wipero, M.H.R., and Mr Lewis. The conversation turned upon tho Kawhia District Road Survoys, and Native Land Courts. The Native Minister proposed to withdraw tho Armed Constabulary, and to substitute a' Civil Police. This gave much pleasure to Tawhiao. Mr Ballance also proposed that Tawhiao should nominate an asseisor for appointment by the Governor, to sit with the Magistrate in cases where natives are concerned. It is understood that a meeting of the Land Court is to bo held immediately at Kihikihi. Mr. Ballance said that the time would with come when Tawhiao. could, with advantage, take.a scat in the Legislative Council. Tawhiao said that the Council he desired was one of chiefs like that at Kohimarama in 1860, He would like to consult tho chiefs on the matter discussed, He was greatly pliasod with the result of the interview. He quoted tho Maori proverb that " Tho difficulties which remained were as insignificant as the dust of his finger nails," ■
