Alfred Olliver reported to Dotective Oh'rystal this morning that while digging for a drain at the back of .'an unoccupied; house at Pipitea Point, about'9';n'cl6ck, they unearthed a full■sized skeleton,of Jn human being, The /detective at. once accompanied the men to ;'the,spbt, : and found the statement to bo .'corrects/The skeleton was buried about :6|foet under tho surface and about four feet from the surface of the house, and from the decayed nature of the bones had .evidently been interred a good number of years.., The ground about is composed of shingle and sea sand, and has evidently been at one time under water, so that there is a possibility that the skeleton is that of someone drowned in the days of early "settlement, or, if that is not so,'tho , ; body may have been properly buried ,vhere discovered by the first settlers The District Coroner will be communicated with on the subject, A special meeting of the Trustees of tho Masterton Town Lands was held last night in the Council Chambers. The whole of the members were present, the Chairman, Mr S, E. Gapper, presiding. The yearly statement of accounts was read, arid referred to the auditors for examination and report. Mr E. Feist moved That the application of the Park Trustees for a grant of £SO per annum, in lieu of the present grant of £35, until tho accumulated sum as a sinking fund is sufficientto extinguish the Park debt be acceded to. Mr Gapper seconded, the motion, and a discussion took place thereon. ; Mr W. Perry moved as an amendment, and Mr J. Muir seconded, That the question bo referred to the annual meoting of voters for an expression of opinion, The amendment was lost on a division, tho proposer and seconder being the only two in favor of it. The motion was then put, and a division called. For Messrs Gapper, Hare, Feist, and Parsons. Against, Messrs Perry and Muir. The motion was therefore declared carried. Mr Hare submitted the regulations for the conduct of business, which ho proposed tho Trustees should adopt, The Secretary was instructed to lay them on the table for the purpose of giving the Trustees an opportunity of perusing them at their leisure, before the next meeting, when they will be brought up. Messrs Gapper, Hare, and the Secretary were appointed a subcommittee to draw tip the annual report, Tho meeting then adjourned;

Mr T James; not having disposed of the whole of his sections by auction, offers to part with thum privately at very low prices, and upon msy terms. MrF. A special parade of the Masterton Rifle Volunteers will take place on Monday evening next, when all members are particularly requested to attend, as business of importance is to be considered. John White was brought before Colonel McDonnell, J.P., this morning,-cbarged with beins; drunk and incapable in Queenstreet yesterday. He was fined five shillings. Mr R, M, Galloway left Masterton for Wellington on Saturday, with the intention of leaving there by the Taiaroa. Business, however, necessitated his staying over Monday. His relatives and friends here, not knowing of his detention, wcro extremely anxious, and were greatly relieved on receipt of a telegram from him in the afternoon stating he was still in Wellington. After twelve months competition Captain Donald's trophy, consisting of a silver tea and coffee service, was won on Saturday last by Vol, R. McKenxio with the small score of thirty-four points, including a handicap of five points. The trophy had to he won three times, in succession or four times at intervals, the terms being five Bhots at each range ol 300, 500, and GOO. Vol. McKenzit having won it four time it becomes his absolute property. The other member! of the Masterton corps who have scored i win for it being Lieut. Thomson twice, ' Vol, Hoar twice, and Vols, Ankete'J, C 1 Matthews, W. Welch, and Blane oncf '• each. In the R.M. Court, Masterton, yester 1 day, Mr Stratford disposed of the follow--1 ing cases:—R. Hooper & Co., of the Bon Marcho, received their first instalment of autumn and winter goods on Saturday, these goods have been imported direct from the manufacturers in England and Scotland, and are now being marked off at prices that will compare with any wholesale house in the colony.—-Advt.
