A YANKEE SELL.
I was quite amused a snort time since at the following incident which took place in a down town shipping office:—Tho conversation was on betting, eacli person in turn relating somo one operation of the kind that he had been engasrcd in. Finally it came to Captain Jack, who opened by saying, " Tl]at he had, never made a bet of any consequence, or did not recollect one jusb now, I —but' would bet any ono in tho room five dollars that lie would poke that hat (pointing 'to one) through a ring which he had ou his first finger, and not injure the'hat, "That can't be did, nohow!" said someone in the mora.' '' Will you bet ?'•' asked the Captain. " I don't care if 1 do," aaid No. 2,lns eyes glistening in tye prospect of making five dollars oil such a " (jura thing" i)s he terrned it. The money was deposited and all hands gattiored around tq see some one" did brown." . Captain Jack Blowly takes off the ring, and passes it round to show that all is fair. Every ene is satisfied. Then 1)6 deliberately wipes and polishes the inside, ai|d antiQpoea that he is ready, No. 3 advanced to tho (l pile," to be in readiness. Nov the Captain holds tho ring between his fore finger and thumb, and marches towards the hat, holding tho ring an inch from it; he ran his smnll finger through the ring, which struck the hat and won him tho bet, as he had " poked the hat through the ring!" All turned to soe how No. 2 enjoyed it, but the tails of a coat disappearing through the doorway told the story.
