CORRESPONDENCE.

A COMPLAINT. To the Editor. Sib.—Give me space in your columns re the late throe calves which were either driven or let out of toy placoon Taratahi East a short time since and wore taken to a private residence and sold by public auction in White's Line, Carterton, and were bought by a gentleman in Carterton. Two of them were found by the Carterton police, and the third one was supposod to be on the same place. The two that were foutid wero taken to the Carterton pound by the police, who wrote to the head quarters twice, and the second answer was that they had to take them back to where they got them from, and that the party who bought them could do what he liked witn them. Ido not know much about the laws of the country, because I am only a poor Scandinavian man. 1 was hunting for three weeks for the calves, by which I hut time and money, and was put to a lot of trouble, and 1 am now told that nothing can be done in the matter by law. I have heard that it is said that I received £2O to say nothing more about them, as soon as they were found. I beg to stite that 1 have never received one single penny, and I hope that the party who made the statement will come forward and prove it. People would think that I was out of my mind, to take money like that. If such was the case I would know the thief at once. As £2O would not more than pay me for my time and expenses that I have been to over it, and as I don't intend to take any monoy unless it is from the Court, should it ever cope to Court, and I hope that some one will look into the matter and see fair play. 1 am only a working man and have to pay rates and taxes, the same as anybody else, and have to keep my family with what I earn, and I think it is too hard to be robbed of what little I have got and nothing said about it. I ain. &c., N, C. Ohmstbnsen.

To the Editor,

Sir.—As the winter months are approaching, 1 would like to suggest the desirability of establishing m our midst a Parliamentary Union, similar to those we mid m existenco in several towns in' the colony, It would affurd a pleasant lvay of spending many a winter evening, besides affording opportunities of discussing many of the questions of interest that are continually exi/rcisingthe public mind. At the present time we have suchsubjects to deal with a3 Federation, Protection and Frcetrade, Settlement of the Land, Extension of Railways and Further borrowing, Dissolution 'of the Present Parliament, and many others. In addition to the benefits to be derived fr«m discussing such questions, it would enable young men to practise the art of public speaking a very desirable acquisition, and for which few opportunities present themselves in a country township, Perhaps some of your correspondents will take the subject up, and bring this suggestion to a practical issue, Jam, etc,, Nemo.
