FIRE BRIGADES COMPETITION.
The following are the results of Thursday's competitions
Ladder Rescue Race, for two men, Two men to run 75 yards to platform and raise ladder, one man to ascend and bring dummy infant from the top of the platform to the ground. Time to be takeh from start till ladder man touches ground again, Any man dropping the baby before being dismissed by the Judges, will disqualify, his team. Baby about 28lb in weight. Two entries allowed from each brigade. Napier (Bogle and Gilberd).., 1 Ballarat City ~, 2 Napiei (second team) 3
Great fun was caused by this event, which was the running up a ladder and rescuing a dummy infant from tho platform. The Gisborne men ran first, but did not get through very smartly. The New Plymouth men did not run in the first set, The Masterton man dropped the. baby when half way down, a mishap which elicited roars of laughter from the spectators. The Auckland man made very good time; He Carried the poor child-over his left shoulder,' holding its clothes with his teeth. The Spit rescuer got one of the poor thing's legs foul of the rungs. The first Napier team, Gilberd and Bogle (the former being the rescuer) cut down the previous record ereatly, and by Gilberd's smartness in the rescue, set a standard never afterwards reached. This feat elicited more cheering than any other that had been performed, The second Ballarat City team were loudly cheered too, as they came within a tenth of a second of Gilberd and Bogle's time, The second Napier team made good time also. Those who did not see these performances should be informed that the ascending firemen did not simply reach the dummy from the ladder. He had to leave the ladder entirely to pick up his back-loading.
Hose and Hydrant Practice, wet, for two men. Two men, carrying hydrant, to run 50 yards to plug, fix hydrant, run out 60 feet wet canvas hose, fix branch, and with water strike disc. Napier 1 Ballarat City 2 Dunodin 3 FRIDAY. Alarm and Rush, 200 yards. Ist prizeCash or trophy, value £4 4s; 2nd prize-Trophy, value £2 2s (presented by Hallensteii. Bros); 3rd prize—Cash or trophy, value £1 Is. Total value, £7 7s. Fireman to run 25 yards to clothes (throwing off private coat and cap), put on uniform, run 200 yards to engine, Two entries from each Brigade. Mastorton 1 Kumara ... 2 Masterton 3 Fireman's Flat Raco, 200 yards. Ist prize—Cash or trophy, £3 3a; 2nd prize-Cash or trophy, £2 2«; 3rd prize-Cash or trophy £1 Is, Hounslow (Masterton) ... 1 Copeland (Wanganui) ... 2 Brady (S. Dunedin).., ~ 3 Tug of War, Blue uniforms v, Red uniforms (10 men teams). Prize—Cash or trophy, value £lO.
The Reds won this event, the teams being composed of Campbell, Davenport and Austin (Wanganui), Davy and Young (Ballarat E.), McKinlay (Dunedin), Carey and Holly (Dunedin S.) and Hounslow (Masterton),
Consolation llace—For teams who had won jio prizes previously. Hose reel practice for fivo men, as in first event, Auckland 1 New Plymouth ... ... 2 Tiinaru 3 The Tirnaru men ran first in this event. Somehow or oilier they lost a deal of time and did not get through well. The Marton team came next, and did the run down in 22 sees., but were slower than the previous team. The Auckland team ran down in 19 sees,, and got through vory smartly. The Naseby team came down in 20 sees., but had to wait a little for water, and the couplings were not fixed when water was turned on. The Mastorton team ran down in 23 sees., but got through very badly. The Gisborne team came next and did a very slow run down. They got through very fairly considering they never saw a hose reel before, and they were cheered for the plucky way they got through, The men themselves said that they camo down to learn and see how the events were got through, The New Plymouth men in the run down were very quick. At the start the hydrant man slipped, and the hoso reel was down to the plug as soon as he was,
The Banquet, In the evening the visiting teams were entertained at a banquet laid in Messrs Banner & Liddle's rooms, Tennyson Street. His Worship the Mayor of INapier occupied the chair, and was supported on the right and left by the members of the Ballarat East and Ballarat City teams respectively. The vice-chairs were filled by honorary Fire Inspector Miller and Superintendants Waterworth and Riddell. The largo room in which the tables were laid was prettily decorated with flags and pictures, tho general effect being heightened by the various uniforms worn by .the different teams. Some 250 or more guests, including a large number of prominent citizens, sat down to an' excellant repast provided by Mr W. Schenierning. After full justice being done to the good things provided and the usual loyal, patriotic, and local toasts had
been duly honored. His Worship the Mayor formally presented the prizes won by the successful competitors, The following is a list of the winning teams; —Dunedin City, five fold medals, £BO in cash, and a hose reel, for the hose reel flat; Soutii Dunedin, second prize for same event, fivo silver medals, handsome salver, and £lO cash; Napier, third prize, silver cup and £lO cash, , Spit, five gold medals, £6O cash, handsomo clock, for enpine practice; Dunedin City, second prize for same event, five silver medals, handsome epergne, and £5 cash; Napier, third prize, handsome trophy and £5 cash; Kumara, fourth prize, handsome barometer and £5 presented by cabmen and expressmen of Napier. ■
Ballarat East, handsome tea and coffee service for one-man ladder race; Wanpanui, second in same event, £3 3a, Ballarat City, third, £2 2s. Ballarat City, five gold medals, handsome epergue, and £6o'cash for hose and ladder; Ballarat East, second. 5 silver medals; handsome troph/and £5; Napier, third, handsome cup and £5. Napier, for highest aggregate in twomen events, silver helmet and handsomely mounted belt and axe.

Ballarat City and Ballarat East, cheque for £2O each teams, as a bonus in aid of their expenses in coming to New Zealand. Auckland, handsome trophy given by Port Chalmers Brigade, for Consolation event; New Plymouth, second, trophy presented by the people of Waipawa.
