COMPENSATION COURT.
MASTERTON-THURSDAY.
(Before G. -B. Davy, Judge, and W. Lowes and E. N. Limios, Assessors,)
TheolaimsofEvanMcKenrie (2) and the Trustees of Mrs W, L, Dorset were proceeded-with, lntho latter, witnesses were brought to show that the line cut off a portion of th.3 land, and that, as it was abutting on a river with numerous .turnings, it was rendered nearly useless. W. B. Buiok valued the, low-lying land at £2O an acre. The severance had damaged the land. In reply to Mr Izard witness said that there was severance by the road before the railway, but the former gave two Btreet frontages, while the railway gave a dead boundary. There was a great difference between having a road and a railway frontage., Brown Hunt valued the whol* of the, land at about £l3 per acre, 'and considered the damage done by the railway line to be quite £SOO. Hugh Campbell valued the land at £l2 per acre. The railway had done the property a great deal of barm, but he had not seen sufficient of it to say. how much. .Mr Oonnal, District Engineer, described the land as, being half clear and hjf b#, t '«n«tm% poatwa bm'ntf
steep slopes. He calculated that from 30 to 35 acres had been severed. He did not think that any' of the, bush had been felled years ago, and they had to out agreatdea themselves. This concluded the case. .In the seqond case of Evan McKenzie, Mr Fits-Gerald' said the claim was of much- the same nature, except that a gravel pit had been takon. There being no gravel for a considerable distance, this to of sumo value. Several witnesses having been examined, tha Court adourned till the following day.
