At the Supreme Court yesterday morning the case of Sawkinß v. Waipawa Mail, an action for libol alleged to be contained in an article published m the Mail, was called on, but counsel for the defence intimated that the case had been settled, plaintiff accepting £IOO damages without costs.

At a meeting of the Loyal Masterton Lodge, 1.0.0.F.,M.U., on Tuesday evening, uno new member was accepted by clearance, one new member initiated, and two proposed. The Government returns were read, andthe balance-sheetandaudi-tors' report submitted and adopted, The returns show 48 members. The Lodge funds are still increasing, and there is a credit balance of £207.
The Kumurau Private Hotel is likely to bo grantada temporary license. The Licensing Committeo are in favor of a license being granted to Mr Thos. Carswell, the proprietor, but they are powerless to grant it until June next when the annual meeting is held. A petition is going round, and being numerously signed, prayiug the Governor to grant a license, which he has power to do under the new Act, if it is.shown that somo cause, such as increased traffic or papula tion, has arisen, which it has in the present case.' This house is about to be connected with the Taueru by telephone, Dr Lemon having taken one of the rooms, which he has fitted up for an office, The largo stations and surroundings will also bo connected, which will bo of great convenience for Messrs Elder, Andrew, Morrison and others, The hotel is situated in a natural basin and is sheltered from the winds by the low hills which surround it on all aides, Tholiouso contains 12 bedrooms upstairs, and on the ground floor is a commodious dining room, three sitting rooms, bar, and parlour. The kitchen is fitted up with every requisite, whilst tho stabling accommodation is perfect. Kumurau is a nice driving distance from Masterton, Six hours can be spent here and the return journeymado before nightfall comfortably, Tho roads aro in good order and the scenery is unequalled for variety. Nothing appears to be wanting to assure the success of the Friendly Societies' Sports on the Park Oval to-morrow except fine weather, and of that there is evory prospect. The various Societies will march to the railway station in the forenoon, and on arrival of the train, about 10.5 a.m., form in procession and, headodby the Volunteer Band, march down Lincoln road and Hall-street, through Chapel-street to Renall-street, thence down to'Queen-stroet, and along that thoroughfare to the Park. As all the members of Lodges will appear in regalia, the procession is likely to have a most imposing appearance. Very good prizes have been provided for the sports, and as the entries for tho events that hi've already closed are numerous, pood contests should result.
