the Oollingwood Bank "'robbery were brought up for examination yesterday,, and were remanded for further evidence.
A caucus of the Liboral party, comprising 21 of the leading members,'. was hold yesterday,' when Mr Deakin was appointed leader of the party in place of Mr Berry, The question of the Ministerial ohanges was then discussed, with'the; result that Mr Deakin was empowered to accept Mr Gillies' proposals for a coalition Ministry with equal representation for each party in the Cabinet. It was further stipulated that the Protection policy should be maintained, and that the educational system should remain intact. Londo.v, January. 19. The'first series of Colonial wool auctions for 1886 opened to-day.. There was a good attendance of home Mind foreign buyers. A catalogue of 7,409 bales was submitted at the auction, and elicited fair competition, 179,000 bales are available for the present sales. The series close on February 12th. Mklbouiine, January 20.
The local manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Co. of New Zealand (Limited) reports, on the Melbourne grain market as follows:—Shipping wheat firm, last week's quotations 3s lid to 4s per bushel; malting barley, no improvement, Ks 3d to 3s 9d; N.Z. oats, feed sorts, firm and active demand, 2s lid to 3s Id; milling descriptions, hardening tendency, Id to 2d above last week's prices, 3s 2d to 3s 3d; N.Z. oats, under bond, 2s 2d to 2s 5d per bushel. Washington, January 19. Instructions have been issued by the NavyiDepartnient for the immediate despatch of a United States man-of-war to Samoa. - ' -
London, January 19. A deputation of loyal Irishmen waited upon the Marquis of Salisbury to-day, with reference to the Irish question. The deputation urged upon the Premier the necessity of enforcing, existing laws, and deprecated granting an Irish Parliament, as tending to dismember the Empire. Lord Salisbury's roply assured the deputation that the Government were mindful of the responsibility placed upon them in dealing with the difficulty, and would not be untrue thereto.
