The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, JANUARY 21, 1886. OUR CHARITABLE INSTITUTIONS
Since the passing ol the Hospital snd Charitable Aid Act, general attention lias been directed to the position of the two hospitals in the district, and efforts were at once made to incorporate them as separate institutions. The settlers were very liberal in the matter, and the amount required in public subscriptions was raised without any difficulty. While this was being done, the ftorth Wairarapa Benevolent Society appears to have been overlooked; at any rate, no exertions were made to obtain sub' scribers to the fund, nor was any attempt made to incorporate the Society. We are pleased to notice that someof th"! membersiire now making an effort to effect the change. They are of opinion Unit the affairs of the Society could be far better managed by a local committee than by a Board which meets ia Wellington, and in this wo think they are perfectly.right. At a meeting held yesterday afternoon, a resolution in favor of incorporation was unanimously carried, and a committee was appointed to canvass for subscriptions, We feel assured that the proposed incorporation will meet with the hearty approval oMhe pnplio, who will see that it is necessary to make adequate provision for the poor and needy in the district. They will further see that it is desirable that the management of the institution should be as independent as possible, snd in no case dependent on a Board which meets in Wellington, Under the circumstances' it behoves those who can afford it to suscribe according to their means, With a fair canvass there should be no difficulty in raisin" the necessary £IOO, and we trust that before many days have elapsed the committee will be in a position to claim the Society's independence.
