Christchuroh, January 10. Charles Lockwood, for twelve months employed in prospecting in the vicinity of Browning's Pass, committed suicide there to-day: He had been low spirited for some days. New Plymouth, January 16. Messrs Robinson and-F. Bayley, who went gver the district ravaged by the fire, have returned to town. From a report published by the latter in the Herald, the damage is not half what it was originally estimated at. The utmost extent has not been over £4,000, and this includes houses that wore insured, cattle daily returning, logfunces, only put up to burn; and paddocks of grass On which new grass has already sprung up. The whole matter has been thoroughly investigated by competent persons, and when they have finished, a report will, be published of howthemoneyisfcobedistributed, The Mayor of WanganuiandMr McGuire are now in New Plymouth, when, no doubt, the whole matter will be amicably arranged. Subscriptions recoived here up to date amount to £B2O, This does not include the £IOO sent through from Wellington, northat received.at Wanganui and Marton.
