It is announced that, subject to the concurrence of the Colonial 'representatives at the Berlin Conference and the Government nf New Zealand, arrangements have been concluded tor a rate of sixpence per word, the present minimum of ten words being abolished. The Australian' and New Zealand press, not considering the reduction sufficient, are withholding any stipulation as to a guarantee of increased, traffic.
Melbourne, January 7. ' The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) held their usual weekly wool sale/at their rooms this afternoon. There was a good and representative catalogue.' Some 3800 bales were submitted to auction. The attendance, of buyers'was .large, and the various lots elicited animated competition. The market generally was active at late rates. Greasy merinos sold up to tenpence farthing per lb., and ncoured wool to. seventeen pence, while washed wools were firmer, and realised as much as one shilling per lb.
