Hokitika, this day, The school was burned down yesterday morning at three o'clock. The cause of tho tire is unknown hut incendiarism is or if; might have been caused through hoys getting underneath the building and lighting matches. It was closed for the holidays. The care-taker was in the building on Monday, the town lamplighter passed the premises at midnight, and there was then no sign of fire. There is no water in the neighborhood, and the Brigade's hose though 2,000 feet long, is about 600 feet too short, or else the principal portion of the building could have been saved, A lot of fittings wore got out, but the library has been destroyed, Tho building cost about £4,000, Haweiu, January 7, A bush fire which has been raging near Stratford (a township about "midway between Hawera and New Plymouth) swept into that township yesterday afternoon about 3 or four o'clock, and did great damage. The complete particulars are not yet to hand, but fully 15 families have been left homeless. When the train for Hawera arrived at Stratford, tho lire was burning fiercely, and 20 or 30 women and children were put into the train and brought to Hawera, all loaving their husbands behind to battle with the fire, and somo having been separated from their children. Late in the evening a special train was sent up and brought more people down. The heat and smoke were terrific, but it was hoped that the larger buildings such as Tutty's Hotel, Mulree's store, and others, would be saved, though partq oi them had been on fire. There is-yet no definite information as to the houses which'have been destroyed, or the probable lpsses. One of tho railway bridges has been burned/

A youn? man named Frederick Symons, manager of Gilmer's Family Hotel, which is situated opposite the scone of the late fire, was arrested this affcer.np.on, charged with having certain tobacconist's wares jn his possession, which it is alleged he had stolen during the time the fire was raging,
The man Howard, who was arrested on a charge of attempting to defraud the Government Life Insurance Association, was in the habit of wearing a glove with gutta-porcha in the inside of the thumb to conceal the fact that part of his thumb was missing.
