CORRESPONDENCE.

VOLUNTEERS V CIVILIANS.

To the Editor,

Sir. —1 noticed in your report of the matoh fired on the 7th inst.' between tho above teams, a few remarks which I Bhould like to endorse, viz., that the next match be fired out of rifles strange to both teams. I have no doubt that 6 guns could be got belonging to Volunteers who do not indulge much in shooting. It would bo putting the men on an equal footing and would prove, I am sure, a better contested match. I hear that some of the Volunteers object to this, on thfe grounds that it would be no practice foj them. That ia nonsense. They are frightened, that is my impression.. If there Jb a match arranged'on the above terms (which I hope there will be), I should advise the Volunteers to turn out the morning after the match, and have a quiet hour)s practice with their pet guns, by way of restoring their nerves, and repairing the damage the strange rifles had done them.

I an), etc., „ ; Civiiun, .Masterton, October 8 th,'/
