While the Gas Inspector was inspecting the meter at the United Methodist Free Ohurch to-day with a match, to discover a leak, the gas exploded, Betting fire to the building. The Brigade suppressed the fire, damage being done to the extent of £lO.

Colonel. Lyon severely censured the Auckland Coastguards last night for their conduct in a tramcar while returning from the church parade at Onehunga last Sunday.

Some burglars entered the - ironmongery warehouse of Messrs Morrin & Co;, burst open the cash box, and stole about £5. No arrests have been made,

The Zealandia, with the August English mails, left San Franscisco for Auckland on the 29th ult, timetable date, The City of Sydney with August Colonial mails arrived at San Franscisco from Auckland on the 7th inst, a day earlier than timetable date.

' Dunedin, this day, A terrible dynamite accident occurred ,on Saturday morning at Skippers,- resulting, in the death of John Tripp and Cornelius Nolmarf, The men were warm-, ing dynamite at a fire in their chimney, when the explosion'.occurred. Nolman was blown through the roof of the hut. Tripp was frightfully mutilated, dying two hours after the explosion. Both were unmarried, and were working a claim on their own account.
